It’s always likely improved Chinese aggression is now starting to impact the timelines on a 5th gen platform acquisition. Indigenous platform development can follow it’s own pace with a stop gap in place.

We'll need a proper 5th gen at some stage in the not too distant future. The PAK-FA thing with Russia fell through, leaving only the US option on the table, so it is possible the US makes a waiver for India despite the S-400s.

PAF will definitely than get J35/J31 or export version of J20.

F-35 won't come in the next 10 years for IAF/IN so we also have a decade to decide and secure some funds.
