India's Defence Research and Development Organisation has the technology to develop & place weapons into space. If that is so, then India will be capable of putting it's most advance weapon systems into earth's orbit and then use them to strike targets in Space or on Earth. Such orbital weapon will also lessen the chance of detection or interception by enemy forces before actual strike.

The DRDO has the technology and building blocks to develop these advance Orbital Weapons. Sources in DRDO have said that, "If we can place a satellite into earth orbit then we can also place weapon into Earth's orbit. But DRDO will not be developing any such weapon, as India is against the weaponisation of space.

Officials at DRDO have said that in the longer term, it is necessary to have that capability but stressed that the Indian programme, if any would be purely defensive in nature.

Last year in February 2010, India's renowned defence scientist and DRDO chief Dr V. K. Saraswat confirmed that India possesses anti satellite technology and that India's Agni-III missile has propulsion system, which can be used to propel a kill vehicle in the orbit.

Space treaty prohibits placing nuclear weapon or weapons of mass destruction in space but it is not against putting weapons into space. The Peoples Republic of China has already violated the treaty by actually killing a satellite in space on 11 January 2007.

So the next step for DRDO is to develop orbital weapons, which could stay in space as long as required while orbiting Earth or Moon and the same can be activated and delivered whenever required.

India is developing a very robust Ballistic Missile Defence System. DRDO's Hyderabad Lab Research Centre Imarat (RCI) has won this year's much coveted 'Silicon Trophy'. The DRDO claims that any nation having Ballistic missile defence system technology should have the technology building blocks to build orbital weapons as well.

Weaponsiation of space is different from militarization of space. India is not against militarization of space. Like many developed countries, who have their military satellites, India is also to launch military satellites in space. This year Indian Navy's Naval Communication Satellites will also go up. Then, a satellite for IAF will be placed in orbit followed by a satellite for the Indian Army. Protecting assets in space will be a great challenge in coming years and that's when the question of Orbital Weapons will arise.

We should not forget about "Outer Space Treaty" or the "Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies".

The treaty was opened for signature in the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Soviet Union on January 27, 1967, and entered into force on October 10, 1967. As of 1 January 2008, 98 countries are states-parties to the treaty, while another 27 have signed the treaty but have not yet completed ratification.
The Outer Space Treaty represents the basic legal framework of international space law. Among its principles, it bars States Parties to the Treaty from placing nuclear weapons or any other weapons of mass destruction in orbit of Earth, installing them on the Moon or any other celestial body, or to otherwise station them in outer space. It exclusively limits the use of the Moon and other celestial bodies to peaceful purposes and expressly prohibits their use for testing weapons of any kind, conducting military maneuvers, or establishing military bases, installations, and fortifications (Art.IV). However, the Treaty does not prohibit the placement of conventional weapons in orbit. The treaty also states that the exploration of outer space shall be done to benefit all countries and shall be free for exploration and use by all States.

The treaty explicitly forbids any government from claiming a celestial resource such as the Moon or a planet, since they are the Common heritage of mankind. Art. II of the Treaty states that "outer space, including the Moon and other celestial bodies, is not subject to national appropriation by claim of sovereignty, by means of use or occupation, or by any other means". However, the State that launches a space object retains jurisdiction and control over that object. The state is also liable for damages caused by their space object and must avoid contaminating space and celestial bodies.

Why the hell then these people talk ?/ I mean if you are not going to build something then why the hell are they bragging ? In my opinion if they really have the tech then for God's sake please place the weapons in space and be quite if you are worried about any outcry.

I mean in a couple of years US or Russia will arm the space and we will again be the following them after 8-10 years. I mean why can't we build if we have the tech and whats the need to babble about everything that comes into your head ?

Yes, they can but only when govt allows them to. But the first step is ISRO's RLV programme. This is a potential future orbital warplane. We need weaponisation, we need to put missiles instead of satellites. Waiting for first launch within next one or two years.

These weapons should be develped.
Satellite Launched Missile placed on ememy's space and hit target at Ultra Hypersonic speeds and Anti Asat weapon can be produced.
Anti Asat weapon need not be more agile , just it should confuse the enemy and Asat weapon will come and hit it like decoys.

I believe that such news are planted by govt. to test the waters before a program is launched or tested. This may give an impression of blabbering mouths to concerned people. But I think that this is a maturer way than "bolt from the blue" tests and announcements by China, erstwhile Soviet Union, etc. It was quite a show when they tested and announced the ASAT capability and the powers that be were suddenly calling it the "sputnik moment".
