Don't compare oranges to Apples..
Kashmir movement lost the sympathy when the awareness is created across the world about how Muslims there killed and kicked Hindus out of their houses...Kashmiri movement created thousands of people who took to guns and killed so many soldiers and innocents...you call them freedom fighters but the world perceives them as terrorists...period.
Now , when I have grown up I started seeing the value of people like Gandhi , Mandela and Martin Luther King who fought for their people without violence and succeeded in getting them their rights...Any movement in this modern world loses sympathy once indulged in violence.

That wouldn’t have helped. He has to carefully tap into the white savior impulse of the west and remind them of their responsibilities. If they plan to spread freedom and democracy (standing up for human rights and the UN based world order) antagonizing them would not help.

ultimately, as the prime minister said; Pakistan and India have Nuclear weapons and if there is a conflict it would be a disaster. This is not hyperbole, because the Indian military has stated it is drawing up plans to move on Azad Kashmir if ordered to do so. this is not hypothetical, but an inflection point for the world.
