India grants Rs 2610 cr package to Bhutan

NEW DELHI, March 29 – Three years after Bhutan flushed out militants including ULFA and NDFB from its territory, Government of India expressed its gratitude by sanctioning a Rs. 2610.14 crore package to the Himalayan Kingdom. India’s assistance is under ‘Aid to Bhutan’ Non-Plan Budget of Ministry External Affairs towards extended Ninth Plan (July 2002 – June 2008). The package for the Ninth Plan includes; development Subsidy, Project Tied Assistance, refunds and subsidies.
This decision will result in continued strengthening of India-Bhutan relations based on our strategic and economic interests in an area of high geo-political sensitivity. It will support to the new King of Bhutan, and Bhutan’s transition to a Constitutional democracy, said Union Information and Broadcasting Minister, Priyaranjan Dasmunshi.
It will also generate the opportunities of Indian companies to participate in major projects and strengthen goodwill for India in Bhutan by fulfilling our existing commitments, he further added announcing the decision of the Union Cabinet.
