Indian government watchdog raps state government for wastage and corruption in infra projects
+ - 20:04, September 28, 2009

An Indian government watchdog on public infra construction has criticized the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand for wastage of public money and corruption in government-funded projects, according to an official report by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG).

The CAG report presented in the State Assembly of Uttarakhand recently said freshly constructed roads are breaking open and are rebuilt while contractors were getting huge benefits from the projects.

According to available details, the report presented in the state Assembly in the state capital Dehradoon had clearly underlined how tens of millions of rupees had been wasted in the name of construction of roads and how contractors made money by this contract.

It said that in nine Public Works Department divisions alone, 170 million rupees (3.4 million U.S. dollars) were paid to contractors as additional payment.

The gravity of the situation can be gauged from the fact that one of the roads which was constructed at the cost of 53.6 million rupees swept away in the first monsoon drizzle.

The available details pointed out how the CAG report has even questioned the working methodology of the state government in these contract tenders.
