India disowns team taking part in Kabaddi World Cup 2020 in Pakistan

New Delhi: The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) seems confused as it has disowned the team participating in the Kabaddi World Cup 2020, which is being played in Pakistan for the first time.

IOA chief Narinder Batra statement comes a day after the Indian kabaddi team reached Pakistan to take part in the tournament.

Batara said that he did not even know the players, adding that the ‘unofficial’ team cannot use the word India in this tournament, The Hindustan Times reported.

"The IOA has not approved and it has also not been approved by the federation so I don’t know who has gone. Whether 60 or 100 have gone, I have no idea. The kabaddi federation, which is a member of IOA, has confirmed that they have not sent anyone. I have seen statements from the (sports) ministry which confirm they have not approved anyone. So I don’t know who they are and what the story is," he was quoted as saying.

The Amateur Kabbadi Federation of India (AKFI) also said that no permission was granted to any team to participate in the world cup.

AKFI administrator SP Garg said that the team had only sought information about visit to Pakistan for taking part in the tournament.

As per the procedure to participate in any overseas events, the national federation is required to inform the sports ministry which in response communicate it to the ministry of external affairs and the ministry of security for political clearance and security clearance respectively.

The eight-days long event started from February 9 and the matches will be played in Lahore, Faisalabad, Kartarpur and Nankana Sahib.

This is the first time that Pakistan is hosting the event. Earlier, India had hosted all of the previous six-circle-style kabaddi world cups.

Teams participating in the event are Pakistan, India, Canada, the United States, Australia, England, Iran, Kenya, Sierra Leone and Azerbaijan.
