The state owned Power Grid Corporation of India completed the construction and started power supply in its first 'Power Transmission Express Highway' or the longest HVDC power transmission corridor connecting northern states with north eastern region. The corridor would facilitate to and fro power supply as per seasonal demand and supply position.

The transmission systems are enabler for vibrant Electricity Market to transfer cheap power to deficit regions and development of Renewable Energy. The average per unit price of energy trading in the market has gone down to less than Rs. 3 per kWhr from the peak of Rs. 8 per kWhr few years back. The reduction in market price of energy has enabled merit order in operation of generators.

The corridor would help transmission of 6,000 Mw of power. However, currently, around 1,700 Mw of power flow is taking place. Power Grid executives said that the line would help in future for managing the supply of large scale hydro power, infirm renewable-based power and would connect power transaction done with Bhutan, Bangladesh and Nepal.

The 1,750 km HVDC line traverses through 3 regions, 4 states and around 40 rivers. This massive line consists of 7000 locations. Power Grid said that this high capacity transmission link is the world's largest multi-terminal 800kV HVDC Project, which comprises of 3,000 Mw HVDC terminals each at Biswanath Chariyali & Alipurduar and a 6000 Mw terminal at Agra.

The company is building two more such corridors connecting Chhatisgarh with Haryana and Tamil Nadu respectively are under construction.

"With the operation of this link, North East can get access to cheaper power from Chattisgarh/Jharkhand during low hydro generation and Surplus hydro generation of North Eastern Region shall now find market in rest of India," said R N Nayak, CMD, Power Grid.

S K Soonee, CEO of POSOCO, the power system manager said the direct interconnection of north eastern region with the national grid will be a major boost for hydro power development in North East, Sikkim and Bhutan. "HVDC system would enhance the security & stability of the grid and also reduce the transmission losses," he said.

North Eastern Region together with Sikkim and Bhutan has a large hydro generation potential to the tune of 65,000 MW. Power Grid said the evacuation of this enormous amount of hydro potential needs about 12-15 high capacity transmission corridors each of 5,000-6,000 Mw capacity, keeping in view constraints of right of way in Chicken Neck Area. Out of four feasible corridors in the Chicken Neck Area, one corridor was picked up for implementation by Power Grid for NER development, said the company.

India to start the 'elite' club in near future
The future is already here. A test line of 1200 kV AC is commissioned and soon we will implement this technology for commercial deployment.

One more 800 kV HVDC line is coming up.

ABB is one of a few promoters of UHVDC. As a trial, SGCC (State Grid of China Corp) had worked with XD Group (a Chinese company), and ABB, and installed one UHVDC ±800 kV (twin pole) line, 2210 km, i.e. "Southern Hami - Zhengzhou UHVDC". The line is already operational since January 2014.

Compared to 800 kV UHVDC, SGCC had pioneered the development of 1000 kV UHVAC. In its pilot project, China has made several breakthroughs in core technologies and equipment production to transmit power economically through the world's most complex UHV lines. SGCC formulated its own specifications for rated voltages through extensive grid studies and investigations of voltage coordination. The major breakthroughs include voltage standard, electromagnetism environment, over-voltage and insulation coordination, reactive voltage control and lightning-proof technology. As a result, China could domestically produce 90 per cent of the equipment needed for the project and now has intellectual property rights over UHV transmission lines.

Global Transmission: Focus on UHV AC: China shows the way by energising 1,000 kV line

By now China lead the world in UHV transmission in terms of technology, production and installed capacity. As of 2014, total 13,741 km of UHV lines are operational, and another 14,414 km are under construction or preparation.

Other than building in China, SGCC had also developed market in Brazil and going to build & operate 4,344 km of UHV lines in the South American country.

So this means Assam will get more power with less cost?

@Shotgunner51 Nice to see China installing an amazingly large EHVAC and HVDC network.
Even in India, ABB has joined hands with state run Bharat Heavy Electrical Limited (BHEL) and these two companies undertake large HVDC projects.

BHEL also produces several HVDC transmission system components

1) How are they doing in laying transmission supply lines to villages? Any sort of % completed out of total number will be appreciated (total number meaning = 100% electrification of the country)

2) Does Tamil Nadu still have scheduled and / or unscheduled power cuts? Googled news indicates govt saying there are no power cuts and opposition saying there are powercuts

3) What is the status of the Kudnakulam reactor? Is it in production and if so at capacity level?

The system is basically to evacuate power (mostly Hydel) from North East to Industrial centers.

As far as prices are concerned, that depends solely on Power Purchase agreements signed between DISCOMs and GRID.

What is the status of the Kudnakulam reactor?
Is it in production and if so at capacity level?
KKNPP Unit 1 is operating at 1000 MWe.

KKNPP Unit 2 is under commissioning and slated for reactor criticality in November this year.

It's good that India joins UHV transmission, it's essential for long distance transmission and can help to optimize location planning of power plants.

Regarding the choice of UHV, the installed 800 kV UHVDC of ABB is a fair option. In the future India may consider a mixed use of this and the 1000 kV UHVAC of SGCC. Despite 1000 kV UHVAC could be more expensive in construction, planners can evaluate on a case-by-case scenario, subject to requirements of different cases.

With economy of scale, if India also adopts the UHVAC like China, Brazil, costs may be driven down. Russia is also a potential user.
