India checks pilots after finding fake licenses

NEW DELHI -- Indian authorities have begun checking the licenses of all airline pilots in the country after at least four were found to be flying using fake documents, a top civil aviation official said Monday.

Two pilots were arrested last week for using fake certificates to gain licenses, including a pilot with national carrier Air India who falsified his qualifications. The other two pilots were being investigated for irregularities in their flying licenses.

The licenses and other documents of all 4,000 pilots flying commercial aircraft in the country will be scrutinized, said Bharat Bhushan, director general of civil aviation.

A second pilot was arrested last week after damaging an aircraft while landing and a scrutiny of her papers showed she had used fake documents to get a license, Bhushan said.

"Fake licenses are very few so there is no need to panic," Bhushan said.

Opposition lawmakers Monday accused the government of failing to check corruption in granting licenses and endangering the lives of thousands of travelers.

Civil Aviation Minister Vyalar Ravi told Parliament last week that authorities had taken action against 57 pilots who reported for duty drunk over the past two years.

Ten were fired and some others had their licenses suspended or were taken off the flying roster for short periods, Ravi said.

Air travel has boomed in India on the back of a growing economy, leading to the rise of a slew of private airlines that have been struggling to hire pilots.

indian skies are one among the safest skies

Was due to a foreign pilot who wanted to have a smooth landing rather than a safe landing.

Just a minor correction it was a Serbian pilot who, as with the rest of the piloting community in the world, was overworked and had led him to doze of in the cockpit and when he ace to just before landing was extremely disorientated and landed to late on the runway to stop at the end as Mangalore is one of the most challenging airports to fly to in the best of times. In fact the Serbian pilot was EXTREMELY qualified, he had 10,000 hours on the 737. So the accident was really due to fatigue of the pilot, a problem all over the world.

It is known that the Indian aviation sector is actually one of the safest in the world in the last 10 years due to advanced radars and equipment being installed, highly educated and trained ATCs and a robust, competent air-accident investigation board. I know this because my close friend is a junior pilot with BA ad flys to S.Asia 15-20 times a month. He told me flying to almost any airport in India was a dream as there are world class standards enforced by the civil aviation authority. However the situation in Pakistan is considerably worse with safety standards fluctuating greatly over the country. In short he'd rather fly to anywhere in India ANY day, especially if sometimes he doesn't have to look at for the trail of incoming SAMS-no joke!!

Am happy that male pilots are now being grilled otherwise all were blasting female pilots in India sometimes back

this is disgrace.. i know this dearth in industry was due to the low demand for pilots before the airline was open to private operators. there are lot of pilots from foreign countries flying the planes in india due to high demand now. Looks like industry was never geared up to this demand & crooks started taking advantage. Thought this was a white color job & lot of people would be attracted towards this trade. maybe now.. airlines might need to make this highly paid job to sway youngsters from IT & management industry!!
