India has taken the US to the World Trade Organization (WTO) over import duties levied on Indian steel products.

The US has imposed a duty of nearly 286% on some steel pipes, saying they had been unfairly subsidised by the government.
The move comes just days after India challenged an increase in US visa fees for foreign workers.

India and the US are involved in a series of disputes, raising fears that trade relations could be damaged.

Last month, the US took India to the WTO against Delhi's ban on American farm products, including poultry and chicken eggs.

Government help?

India is one of the biggest steel producers in the world.

However, steel manufacturers in India buy a large amount of their iron ore from the state-owned National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC), the country's largest iron ore producer.

There are concerns that NMDC may be supplying iron ore at subsidised prices to the country's steel makers, giving them an unfair advantage.

But India has said that the corporation sells iron ore at prevailing market rates.

It has argued that along with supplying Indian factories, the NMDC also exports iron ore to Japan and South Korea and its prices are guided by movements in the international market.
