Reiterating that India-U.S. partnership is a “key component” of America’s “rebalance” to the Indo-Asia-Pacific, a top U.S. Admiral last week expressed concern over China’s increased “assertiveness” in enforcing its claims in the South China Sea and supported India’s increased role in the region under the principles of open sea lanes and freedom of navigation.

During the visit of U.S. President Barack Obama to India in January, both sides signed a strategic vision document, “U.S.-India Joint Strategic Vision for the Asia-Pacific and Indian Ocean Region,” which specifically referred to safeguarding maritime security in the South China Sea. It had not gone down well with Beijing.

“The South China seas are international waters and India should be able to operate freely wherever India wants to operate. If that means the South China Sea, then get in there and do that,” Admiral Harris said.

At the same time, the Admiral described China’s naval presence in the Indian Ocean as “positive” as it was involved in anti-piracy operations in the Gulf of Aden.

The U.S. sees India as the key to its rebalance to Asia. The Admiral acknowledged that India’s was one of the most capable navies in the U.S. exercises. He expressed intent to expand the scope of the exercises and go multilateral, probably involving ASEAN nations as well at some point.

Admiral Harris said: “I was involved with Malabar 1995 and now you look at Malabar 2014, and it is leaps and bounds beyond what it was. I would like to have an increase with India in special operations exercises.”

Under the rebalance to Asia, the U.S. plans to shift 60 per cent of its Navy to the Pacific fleet by 2020. “It is not about China,” Admiral Harris was quick to point out. “It is really about us. It is about recognising that our economic future lies in the Pacific and the Indian Ocean.”

He is right. The one country that can stop
India from going to SCS is the US.So he is saying that India has the American blessing to go to SCS.

Also, how did the writer of the article concluded that India is the key of US rebalance in Asia?

.
This India China duels needs to stop. We have to accept that we are at least 2 decade behind China in most of the fields. India needs to strengthen as a powerful country economically first.

"India can operate in South China Sea, says U.S. Admiral"....does this mean that Indian can't go to SCS all these time until recently to get US blessing to go there? so much from an Indian National Security Advisor MK Narayanan to claim that "US cannot counter China in Asia without India's support" this is so Hilarious  when itself still need US permission to go SCS...LMAO

.
Thank you for pointing out the obvious Admiral and thank you Indian media for picking up on these few comments and splashing them across your websites to get those oh-so precious TRPs.

Relax. Stop feeding the trolls bro. The Admiral is simply supporting the Indian position. Its good for the world to realize how China is in the wrong.

Indians will sail to SCS if we want to do .In fact we have two warship in SCS for the protectiin of our oil exploration.
And we dont go for further deployment until there is necessary for it .US Admiral was here for our support because as you see in that article except Japan US dont have any other reliable nation that can support them with a better naval.might.

Oh now you admit you have two warship to protect your oil exploration in SCs and you're crying our Sub docking in SL port , hypocresy at best. And how you expect Indian Navy to support US in SCS beside Japan?

.
Dont worry about it Dra goon......we are quietly building an alliance to counter our threat perceptions.

. .
Why not...just like indian ocean is not India's ocean...hence

long live.... freedom of navigation

Through our CBGs.We have a western fleet and Eastern fleet.
At current scenario thereis not threat to both these fleet in IOR.So we can spare Western fleet if there is any emergency .
But I dont think there is no need for it even in near future.
Within one decade we willhave 3 CBG ,one will be nuke CBG enough for powerprojection.
But I hope Chinese dont give any excuses for that in future.

Excuse to be in SCS with your CBG?, you can come anytime but you will never be able to deter us from go to IOR and possible do some docking with other SA countries. And wait for a decade later than talk, we shall see who will have the most and the more powerfull CBG.
