India bans book

Your govt banned it and YOU being Indians on this very forum were criticising the ban. thats the double standard i am talking about. You being Indian nationals were criticising our protests over blasphemous caricatures whereas you were hell bent on strict punishment to MF Hussain. thats the double standard i am talking about.

We are a democracy. Some people will support the ban and some will resist the ban.

I, personally, am not in favor of the 'ban-it' philosophy. In my opinion, banning something only means that we do not entrust our public capable of making judgements about things. I'm in favour of unbanning both this Gandhi book and Satanic Verses. Let people be the judge.

I'm not sure how can you call this 'double standards'.

I'm sure out of billions of muslims in the world, I can find a few who will support Satanic Verses. So what is that? Double standards of muslims?

. .
No. Indian muslims were against the contents of the book and so the govt. had to ban it in keeping with their wishes.

When something bad happens, Indians like to play the ethnic minority card such as labeling him as "Indian Muslim" and not just Indian. And when an Indian Muslim did something good on the international stage then India will just claim that he is "Indian" and not Indian Muslim !!!

Now you are resorting to trolling. Your frustration and handicap with logic seems to be getting the better of you.

. .
no we use Indian muslim when ever we have to differentiate muslims living in India from rest of the muslims who are not living in india:wave:

Why play the ethnic card by labeling the guy as Indian Muslim and not Indian when he is an Indian ?

. .
Your truth is irrelevant to the topic, hence the trolling.

You are just trying to divert the attention somewhere else from the topic by accusing me of "trolling" when it was the other user who is playing the ethnic card by labeling Salman as Indian Muslim !!! Salman Rushdie is an Indian. Why label him as Indian Muslim ?

Let us not deviate from the topic, shall we?

The point is simple.

India is a democracy and Indian govt. has to go by the wishes of its people.

Many people in India (mostly muslims) were against Satanic Verses so we had to ban it.

Similarly, many people in India are against this Gandhi book and that's why we have to ban it.

This thread is not about Salman Rushdie. Come back to topic.

Ranjit Hoskote, a writer and general secretary of PEN India, which fights for free expression, condemned the ban and said local media had misconstrued both Lelyveld's intentions and the nature of Gandhi's relationship with Kallenbach.

“You can't cite a worse example of third hand reportage and comment,” he said. “How can you ban a book you haven't read?”

Banning the book is nothing but trying to hide the TRUTH

. .
You are prematurely assuming that what the book states IS the truth and nothing else.

What if the book nothing but a bunch of lies?

Then India should not ban the book and let people read and find out if the book is "full of lie" or not !

Yes. i'm not in favour of banning the book. Neither this Gandhi book nor Satanic Verses should have been banned.

Alas, the govt. thinks otherwise.

But still the govt. cannot be accused of banning books/material seemingly annoying to any one particular community.

The govt. is fair to the concerns of all communities, at least in this regard.
