India, Assam Rebels Sign Accord to End Three Decades of Violence

The main rebel group in India’s northeastern state of Assam reached an agreement with the government aimed at ending the region’s three-decade insurgency.

The United Liberation Front of Asom, or ULFA, the central government and the government of Assam today signed the accord that calls for a suspension of operations against the rebel group and for ULFA to end violence, the government said in a press release on its website, confirming an earlier report today by the Press Trust of India.

Assam, which shares a border with Bhutan and Bangladesh, is home to several groups fighting for independence or autonomy. The ULFA took up arms arguing local people haven’t benefited from Assam’s resources, especially its large tea estates and oil fields.

we should thank the Bangladeshis and ... the Myanmar govt (hmm) it was only because of their cooperation that we were able to make the positions of the ULFA untenable.

i've been to the NE very beautiful area and one way we could develop the NE states is by tourism and globalization the NE has been called paradise unexplored it's a shame due to all of the fighting the tourism industry has not been expanded over there

Not quite. The rats knew that with a booming economy this is their chance to join the mainstream. If tomorrow, we got an iron-handed and decisive PM, they'd be in a shytestorm like how Mizo terrorist groups were during Indira. These rats are the damn reason why our region is not developed. Not just ULFA but some other small idiotic lunatic groups as well. These fools dream of a separate tribe area where their gun law would be mandate. Infact a significant number of Assamese (easily majority) are fed up of the violence and want development. None of the civilians want to separate from India except for lunatics like ULFA and NSCN and NSCM.

These rats use the same old tactic to trick innocent poor farmers and villagers and use their support as well as support from Baptist Church (it supports terrorism in NE). Though ULFA doesn't get backed by the former, but they realized it smartly. Otherwise, it would have been a nightmare for them sooner or later.

Because there is no strong defense policy. This government is so scared (all the parties) of confronting the realities that it always neglects us. And neglect gives the enemy an upper edge. This cowardice of the government at center is the reason why entire NE (except my state and Assam) is nowhere compared to rest of the country.

Mizoram (i visited it recently) is very developed it felt like i was in Chandigarh again when i visited Mizoram and yes the spineless UPA is apathetic towards the NE Manipur and Nagaland are 2 fine examples the socialist UPA idiots and there populist policies are screwing the country over NE needs globalization and tourism and we need to develop the Siliguri corridor and make infrastructure there so it is easier to get to the NE as well as making many airports in the NE as well

i don't think the BJP is popular in the NE is it? there needs to be more regional parties over there the rebels should join politics but i do not think the local populace supports the rebels as much now

Congress neglect the poor look at Naxlas and NE they are fighting because central gov't is apathetic towards them the socialist and populist policies of the UPA/Congress is killing India globalization and development is needed for these areas look at Bihar as an example 20 years ago it was a complete shthole now when i recently visited it did not even look the same it was moderately developed but there is still a long ways to go

the real bullets we need to kill the Naxal and NE insurgencies is development and social liberal policies the ethnic groups and tribes are neglected and that should not be happening

Sidhu bhai, I meant overall progress and integration with rest of the country. Only small-scale to medium scale businessmen, goverment employees and members of military are having good status compared to hi-tech industries of Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai etc. Though there is air connectivity with IndiGo and Air India going, there's almost minimal integration of the place with rest of the country. What I wish is that there is equal travel between all NE and other states of India as much as people travel between Delhi and Mumbai.

Then see how tourism industry booms here. Technically if you see infrastructure wise, even my city Gangtok is very much ahead of most other Indian cities. But there's very less industry here whether it is commercial or tourism. That creates a gap in national supply chain if you get what I mean.

Well I don't about rest of the places but in my state there are regular on and off tie-ups with BJP. Arunachalis are also same way. But BJP needs to have a stronger center. We don't like weaklings and indecisive idiots and hence current BJP leadership's indecisive attitude is only doing them more damage. Narendra Modi is the only leader who struck a serious chord with the locals (Advani tried too but didn't work so much).
