India has approved the plans to expand their force levels and military infrastructures on the eastern and on the western sea beds of the Lakshadweep chains and the Andaman Islands and Nicobar Islands.
The plan involves ramping of the air force, navy, army and the infrastructure of coast guards. Also, to include radar network as well as increasing the levels of both their men and their machines as said by one top official for the defence ministry.
He said that the plans were approved during a meeting at the office of national security adviser last month by the armed forces and this involves enhancement of the infrastructure and also for force accretion at the chains mentioned. The realization growing in India is that the key to dominating the zones is these island territories and they secure the strategic and economic interests. This will also boost the engagement with other allied countries such as Myanmar, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Mauritius, Malaysia and also Maldives by giving them support in the military assets transfers and capacity building as well as in joint patrolling at the borders.
At the chain of Nicobar and Andaman, tri-services command is already taking place with the air force, navy and army in it's force structure. The Lakshadweep chain has several coast guard district stations and headquarters.
Also, an approval was obtained to upgrade the amphibious warfare for training in the islands and to increase the army force levels. Port Blair's naval air bases and Car Nicobar's air force bases will also be upgraded to facilitate choppers, fighter jets and heavy transportation planes.
Sukhoi SU-30 MKI jet fighters are also being tried out by the IAF from the air bases in these Islands. The airstrip in Shipbur will be increased to 12,000 feet from the 3,200 feet to support different kinds of aircraft and for night flying. Unmanned planes will also be deployed for surveillance along the radar chains.
Chief PV Naik said that they will do the force accretion plans in a planned manner and will happen in the next 2 to 3 of the 5-year plans.
Jets will be scaled up by the navy at the Daglipur area, Kamorta and also at Campbell Bay to have better refueling & communication facilities for their operational turn-around bases. Also, more personnel will be deployed. They will also place several more warships like the landing pontoon docks that will help with their amphibious warfare that is capable of carrying combat troops and also battle tanks.
In Lakshadweep, their coast guard had opened 2 stations and district headquarters. The navy now has plans of having a detachment at the island chain that could then be upgraded to be a full-fledged base. Somali pirates operating along the island chains will also be deterred by the armed forces at the Lakshadweep.
