India and Myanmar to conduct five-day joint military exercise in Meghalaya on 20 November

Umroi: Indian and Myanmar armies will conduct their maiden joint exercise in India's northeastern state of Meghalaya, an army official said on Saturday.

The five-day exercise slated to start on 20 November will be held at the newly-inaugurated state-of-the-art Joint Training Node at Umroi Cantonment, about 25 kilometres from Shillong, the state capital of Meghalaya.

Exercise "IMBAX-2017" is the first-ever military training exercise on United Nations Peacekeeping Operations (UNPKO) between the two nations, being conducted on the Indian soil, according to Defence Spokesperson Lieutenant colonel Suneet Newton.

He said 15 officers from the Myanmar Army and 16 officers from the Indian Army shall jointly train for over a period of six days.

Newton said the aim of the bilateral training event is to train the Myanmar delegation for participation in the United Nations Peacekeeping Operations under the United Nations Flag.

"The Indian Army has a rich experience of serving in the UNPKO and during the IMBAX-2017, the focus will be on training the Myanmar Army delegation on the tactics, procedures, expertise, and methodology required by the contingent of the member nations for serving in UNPKO," the defence spokesperson said.

Indian and Bangladesh armies successfully conducted Exercise SAMPRITI at Umroi Joint Training Node on 11 November.

GUWAHATI: After successful joint training exercise between the armies of India and Bangladesh this month, the Umroi Joint Training Node in Meghalayais all set to host similar exercise with Myanmar army from November 20 to November 25.

Defence PRO, Lt Col Suneet Newton said the first India-Myanmar Bilateral Military Exercise 2017(IMBAX - 2017) is for the first time to be held in India.


Lt Col Newton said the joint exercise is also the first of its kind military training exercise on United NationsPeacekeeping Operations (UNPKO) between India and Myanmar.

"The aim of this bilateral training event is to train the Myanmar delegation for participation in United Nations Peacekeeping Operations under the UN Flag," Lt Col Newton said.

The upcoming bilateral exercise will be conducted at the Joint Training Node, Umroi, Meghalaya by Army's RED HORNS DIVISION under the aegis of GAJRAJ CORPS. The opening ceremony will be held on November 20. The exercise includes participation of 15 officers from Myanmar army and 16 officers from the Indian army who will jointly train for over a period of six days.

The focus will be on training the Myanmar army delegation on the tactics, procedures, expertise and methodology required by the contingent of the member nations for serving in UNPKO. End

#ShapingFutureNavalLeadership #BridgesofFriendship A delegation comprising five cadets and two officers from Indian Naval Academy (INA) visited Myanmar Defence Services Academy (MDSA) at Pyin Oo Lwin, Myanmar from 13 to 18 November 2017. The aim of the visit was to build bridges of friendship, exchange best practices and to consolidate and enhance bilateral defence relations between India and Myanmar. During the visit the delegation was acquainted with infrastructure facilities, selection processes, training methodology, academic syllabus, departments and training procedures at MDSA. The visit also gave INA staff an opportunity to learn and understand the training processes and philosophy followed at MDSA.
