In India apple war, Iran takes bite out of United States
The rivalry between the US and Iran is playing out in the Indian fruit markets. Apples imported from the Islamic nation have taken a bite out of the market share of the popular Washington apples.

India allowed import of apples from Iran earlier this year, and the first batch reached Delhi's Azadpur - Asia's biggest fruit market which supplies products to the entire country - in February.

"After the arrival of Iranian apples, the price of Washington apples crashed by 20%," said trader Rinkle Singh.

Apples from the US, sold at a wholesale rate of Rs. 90-120 per kg, faced little competition at Azadpur. But that changed once the Iranian fruit, priced at Rs. 50-70 per kg, sent the price for Washington apples crashing to Rs. 60-90 per kg.

Chinese apples, still the most popular import, cost Rs. 40-50 per kg, while Indian apples cost Rs. 60-70 per kg.

Trader Ranjit Singh Kohli said Iranian apples, which arrived in huge numbers, are a hit because of their size, colour and quality. http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/Popup/2013/4/29_04_13-metro01b.jpg

Because of trade restrictions against Iran, apples from the country had few takers internationally until India, which has a Rs. 50,000 crore apple market, allowed the import.

But the friendly gesture has had ramifications back home.

Virbhadra Singh, chief minister of India's biggest apple producing state, Himachal Pradesh, asked the Centre to impose restrictions on apple import to help domestic producers.

Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah made a similar request.

Of the total number of apples sold in India, 80% are indigenously produced.

If Iranian apples are good, people will buy it

customer ko kya jitna variety milega, utna acha

I am surprised at the writer approach towards the news. They can generate a 10 megaton nuke news from nowhere.
BTW I love Mangoes, apple is good but not in front of Mango.
Hapus is my favorite mango variety. I just love this one, it's really tasty. Every day we get 2-3 Mangoes in after dinner. Neend bahut achhi aati hai yaar isko khane ke baad.

competition is good.instead of asking govt to stop imports its better if they help their farmers to gain the competetive edge over their counter parts so that they sustain the competition.

I don't think so. Problem is that Indian farmers are not organized so they don't export on the level at which foreigners are doing. So they don't get the level field. This problem is not limited to only apples or other fruits & farming products but variety of product s of different fields. Solution is make a forum which acts as mediator(ownership should lie with farmers) and supports the export on mass scale. That will give us the edge in every field which we are lacking right now.

well leave aside exports we have a lot of demand in the home itself.india is the sencond largest producer of fruits in the world.what we need is a proper distribution system and storage facilities..as u rightly pointed out this is not the problem only with fruits.its the same case with several other commodities.inspite of a global leader in agriculture its a shame to us that still people are slleping with empty stomachs

there are two problems
our farmers lack the scientific approach and a majority of farmers are small land owners so they needs regular loans and frequent waviers..our govt is trying to address these problems dont want to go into the specifics but it still takes time.unfortunately govts are making farmers increasingly dependent on them.this situation must change.and over intervention of govt in agriculture must be changed.lets hope things to get better.but ultimately our farmers must be able to compete atleast in the domesstic market if not in the foreign market..they must endure the competetion.
heres a press release by the govt in last year march
Press Information Bureau English Releases

it says we export less because of these reasons
As per UNCOMTRADE data, the global export of apples during the year 2010 was 71.02 lakh MTs whereas India’s export of apples during the same year was 1946 MT. Therefore, India’s share in export is a meager 0.02%. The reasons for low share of India’s apple export in the world are including:

Ø High demand and lucrative prices in the domestic market
Ø Lack of cold chain infrastructure facilities
Ø Poor rail and road connectivity in apple producing states

and as i said they will become global exporters once they fulfill the domestic demand.for that they must endure the competetion

Indian apples taste bad, i like Australian and American ones

You have'nt tasted the best apples from Himachal then. Now on-topic: It is good that the Indian consumer has a greater choice of fruits that he/she can buy. Can't get better than that. And if they are really good "value for money", then let the Iranian Apples drive out the American apples. Let the better apples prevail, while the chinese apples are there in the market simply they happen to be amongst the cheapest.
