‘Unjustified war’: In a first, Afghan Taliban leader opposes TTP’s fight

ISLAMABAD:
A former Afghan Taliban cadre said on Sunday that the Pakistan Taliban’s war against the state is unjustified as “Islam doesn’t permit Muslims to fight against Muslims”. Agha Jan Mutasim, a former Taliban minister and close aide to Taliban supremo Mullah Omar, also advised the Pakistani government and the army to find a negotiated settlement to the issue.

This is the first time an Afghan Taliban leader has publicly opposed the Pakistani Taliban’s campaign against the state.

“The war of the Pakistani Taliban against the Muslim army and the government of Muslims is against Islam as our religion doesn’t permit this,” Mutasim told The Express Tribune in an exclusive telephone interview on Sunday. “The religious leaders of Pakistan and other influential people should play an active role to end the war in Pakistan as fighting is not in favour of anyone,” he added.

Mutasim had served as finance minister until the ouster of the Taliban regime in 2001. He was critically injured in a firing incident in Karachi in 2010 and was shifted to Turkey for treatment.

The Taliban leader also condemned suicide attacks in Pakistan, saying Islam doesn’t allow attacks which kill Muslims whether it is in Pakistan or in Afghanistan. “We’ve economically suffered a lot due to this senseless war and suicide attacks. When we Muslims fight against Muslims the world considers us as backward nations,” he added.

At the same time, Mutasim said the Pakistani government should also review its policy of use of force because it would only prolong hostilities.

Insurgency in Afghanistan

Mutasim opposed the Afghan Taliban’s insurgency. “Fighting own people, own forces and own government is useless. The Afghans are Muslims and you cannot fight against Muslims,” he argued. But he also urged the Kabul administration not to kill its own people [Taliban]. “Both sides should sit together and work out a compromise as the foreign troops are now preparing to pull out,” he said.

“The Taliban could justify their war against foreign forces as they had invaded Afghanistan and the Taliban had to defend their country and their faith. But if the Taliban want to continue the war after the withdrawal of Nato forces it would amount to an anti-Islam action,” he said. He called for an intra-Afghan dialogue to avoid instability in Afghanistan post-2014.

Afghanistan, Mutasim said, is now undergoing a democratic transition and all sides – the Jihadis, political leaders and the government – should keep in mind national and Islamic values because the country is passing through a sensitive phase.

Asked if the Taliban were in a position to take over Afghanistan like they had done in 1996, Mutasim said, “it’s a changed Afghanistan now. And the Taliban are not in a position to overrun the country.”

Unlike the past the Taliban don’t have a support base, he added. “The Taliban had taken over Afghanistan when there was no Afghan army, no police force, no security institutions and the warlords had only control in their respective areas,” he said.

“Now, the world supports the Afghan National Army and the government, while the Taliban do not enjoy support among the Afghans. In the past, the people of Afghanistan supported the Taliban because they were fed up with the warlords,” he said. However, he added that the Taliban could intensify the insurgency and create problems in most parts of the country.

its actually not a "first"

the Afghan Taleban/former Islamic Emirate govt. of A-stan has many active and former members on record having condemned TTP...disowned their activities too

when Hakimullah Mehsud (deceased) declared his loyalty to Mullah Omar, the latter shunned him. Same is the case with "Mullah" Fazlullah, who is currently hiding somewhere in Afghanistan wearing women's clothing and operationally weak.

I met a journalist from FATA area few days back...a journalist that is unknown but has "critical connections" like no other. Just to give you a hint: He was a personal friend of Dr Shahid Afridi and was first one to know that Afridi was picked up by the state of Pakistan and not "na malooom afrad"...

He told me that TTPs are professional criminals. They are despised by tribals. Tribals, he said, sadly are very ignorant people (lack of literacy rate)..and TTP made use of this lack of education to exploit honest tribals' emotions..

Now, as the war draws to its end, INSHALLAH the true Pakistan will rise again and clean itself from these filthy khawarij criminal TTP!!!

Major points of his interview:

The statement issued by Agha Jan Mutasim is a clear contradiction to the TTP’s actions in the region. TTP and other terrorist organizations have killed thousands of innocent people in the region. We have also lost thousands of brave soldiers in our shared fight against terrorism. The people of region have seen the truth, and these terrorists are unable to manipulate people into buying their contradictory statements. In fact, according to the poll by PEW research, majority of Pakistanis reject their terrorist ideology and stand against extremism in the country. With all said, we reiterate what Rear Admiral John Kirby, Defense Department Press Secretary, said recently:“We've been very clear for many years now that we share common threats with the Pakistanis, that terrorism there is a regional issue, it's not just an Afghan issue or a Pakistan issue. It's the whole region, and we remain committed to having as cooperative and as constructive a relationship with Pakistan as possible.”

Statement of Islamic Emirate regarding allegations by Agha Jan Mutasim and Dubia initiative

1-flag 2Media reports have recently published a statement attributed to a former official of The Islamic Emirate Agha Jan Mutasim which alleges that high ranking officials and commanders of the Islamic Emirate or the Islamic Movement of Taliban convened a meeting in the United Arab Emirates and showed willingness to launch a peace initiative!!?

The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan once again declares to all parties that Agha Jan Mutasim does not hold a position in the Islamic Emirate and neither can he represent it. Similarly the Islamic Emirate considers the recent actions and activities of Agha Jan Mutasim detrimental to both the principles of the Islamic Emirate as well as to the goals of the sacred Jihad while being beneficial for both the invading Americans and their stooges. No representatives of the Islamic Emirate have either attended a meeting in Dubai and neither has talks taken place with the stooge Kabul regime or it’s so called High Peace Council. The Islamic Emirate has delegated officials and a political office to conduct its political activities and if a need arises for contacts with any party, a responsible organ will be tasked with the permission of its head, under the guidance of its leadership and on the practical needs of Jihad. That no one for sure knows the names of the participants that attended the meeting in Dubai, this in itself reveals that neither has a meeting been convened nor has a substantial initiative been launched.

The Kabul regime’s so called High Peace Council which constantly tries to keep its fixed salaries flowing has repeatedly published such futile and baseless reports to stir up media frenzy with false claims of holding talks with rogue figures. The foreign invaders and their hirelings should not strive for repeating their past failed and futile experiments. Ostentatious negotiations and exhibitions will not result in anything other than complicating the issue and prolonging the war. If the Americans and her allies hope that with such fake political proceedings they will divert the attention of the Afghan nation and deplete their fervor for Islam and independence, then they are mistaken and need to reassess the ground realities.

Actually not true. Afghan Taliban have NEVER said anything against the TTP. EVen this news is technically not correct as Agha Jan Motasim was "fired/excommunicated" from the Taliban in 2009 (He was injured in an assassination attempt in Pakistan in 2010, allegedly by Afghan Taliban)

Afghan Taliban gave a eulogy for Hakimullah "shaheed" lols. In a video Badri Lashkar 4, they pay great tributes to Baitullah Mehsud, Hakimullah Mehsud and Nek Mohammad (all anti army) for their "great services and sacrifices"

The Afghan Taliban have even settled many disputes within TTP and have given refuge to Mullah Fazlullah in Kunar. Just like WE play a double game, they do the same with us..

I have to agree with you on this one.

They are chameleons, one day they are Afghan Taliban, next day they are TTP. They go back and forth when it suits them. Like everyone, they need money too and being TTP allows them to get away with things that being with Afghan Taliban might be seen as inappropriate. Like a face saving exercise.

None of them are to be trusted.

I think Pakistan Army has finally realised it. They are going after all Talibans now. (Although the top haqqanis are still protected and are in Kurram). But they should realise this double game hurts them (pak army).

However this is a brainfart. PA going after every foreign militant residing in the country. Even if they are Haqqani they have returned to Afghanistan with TTP leadership.

To be honest it makes no difference. At the height of the insurgency they remained quiet and some of their forces provided shelter to the TTP. Both groups are toxic and prevent Pakistan and Afghanistan from going forward. Both should be disbanded and disarmed.

Also does anyone know if Agha Jan has any influence within the Taliban anymore?

Take this with a pinch of salt.

Mullah Omar is on record having done so.

who told you they (Haqqanis) are in Kurram....very few of them are at present. If anyone told you anything else - they are lying. And I know this, because I belonging to that area.

only time they were there was to help broker cease-fire between warring Turri and Bangash tribes. Bangash are learning from the Salarzai tribe.....they were once #1 helper of TTP, and now the Salarzais are declared enemy of talebs. Salarzai and Turri really gave talebans a good ***-kicking on several occasions.

in exchange for helping to end sectarian/tribal war, Turri/Bangash and all other tribes allowed Haqqani tribesmen to go THROUGH Kurram so they could enter into the Afghanistan as most of them have tribal/ethnic/family ties to across the border. They are an Afghan phenomenon mostly.

nopes he doesnt. He lives in Turkey/Afghanistan now.. Afghan Taliban tried to get rid of him after he became pro talks with Karzai

like Abdul Ghani Baradar...another would be puppet

we did the needful
