Imran warns KP cabinet to mend ways or else
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan on Saturday gave three months to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa cabinet to mend its ways or else he would prefer his party to sit on the opposition benches in the provincial assembly. During this period, Imran will monitor performance of the ministers along with the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Pervaiz Khattak and would not tolerate poor governance at any cost. He was perturbed over reports that people felt unhappy over the performance of some members of Khattak’s cabinet.
Imran gave this warning to the provincial government at a brainstorming session, he chaired at the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa House here, which was attended by Chief Minister Pervaiz Khattak, his cabinet members and those belonging to the allied parties.
He referred to reports pouring in about repeated attempts by legislators to seek transfers and postings of bureaucrats and police officers and asserted that PTI had zero tolerance for such behaviour. A source privy to the meeting, told The News that as a precaution, Imran decided to reshuffle the provincial cabinet: withdraw ministerial portfolios from some and others’ to be changed while a few ministers would get additional ministerial responsibility. “PTI chairman is extremely unhappy over reports reaching him about cases of corruption and ideological party activists being ignored continuously. He was unhappy over reports that a PTI forward bloc may surface, if things are not taken care of,” the source said.
He discussed the cabinet reshuffle to allow for faster delivery to the people. Imran made it clear to the forum that his party’s position was very clear on governance and in no way would it tolerate nepotism, political interference in the bureaucracy and police or any hint of corruption on the part of its legislators.
Imran said that his was a 17-year struggle for change and in no way would he compromise now and allow PTI to degenerate into a party of the status quo. “PTI rather will sit in opposition than be reduced to a status quo party,” he asserted.
Justifying Khan said the cabinet reshuffle was necessitated to improve the performance of the provincial government so as to enable it to deliver on electoral commitments made to the people of the province. He said the PTI had been elected on the basis of bringing about change and ‘Naya Pakistan’ and it could not betray the trust people had put in the party in the general election. Imran emphasised that legislators must lead by example and they must not only be above suspicion but must be perceived by the people to be above suspicion. He made it clear that his party would not compromise on its core commitment of transparency and clean, competent governance and justice for all, to make ‘Naya Pakistan’ a reality in Khyber Pukhtunkhwa, which would be the role model for the other provinces.
