With an eye on Senate elections and possibility of 2012 being an election year, huge amount of foreign exchange is being spent on the import of urea by the government apparently to pursue its political agenda and to gain the support in rural pockets.

Imported fertilizer is being used as an electioneering tool by the federalf government to appease the farmers' community, which constitute a huge vote bank in a country where almost 50% population lives in rural areas and is associated with agriculture in one way or another.

Sources told Business Recorder that there could not be any other motive or the logic behind unending import of urea in the country despite lower demand and a better urea availability situation.
