IIFA Dumps Amitabh Bachchan!

The International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) seems to have dumped Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan as its brand ambassador.

Big B has been the face of the IIFA awards and weekend, that’s been taking Indian cinema to the world, for years. But now, he’s been quite unceremoniously removed, apparently because he allegedly boycotted IIFA in Sri Lanka last year.

In June last year, after a call from the south Indian film industry to boycott IIFA in Sri Lanka, Big B had failed to turn up at the event because he allegedly did not want son and daughter-in-law’s movie Raavan to face any protests at home.

Even Salman Khan, who hogged the limelight at IIFA in Sri Lanka, had openly said back then that Mr. Bachchan “should have been here.”

Now, in response to the Big B’s snub, IIFA has told the superstar that his services are no longer required for IIFA to be held in Toronto this year.

“Not coming to Toronto IIFA... IIFA says my services are not required,” Big B tweeted.

When asked why’s he is ditching his fans in Toronto, Big B clarified: “It’s not me .. it’s the organizers of IIFA that do not want me in Toronto.. SriLanka was the same.”

Pretty lame of South Indians to force Amitabh Bachan from not going to SL. Pretty lame for him to comply to something so absurd. Sri Lanka should be supported during this period when its finally emerging as a stable nation.

I agree that it was really lame on the part of the Tamil movie industry and the politicians. The Tamil public really do not care. But the politicians and the Tamil movie industry tried their best to politicize the issue, in vein. There are of course poor Tamils who suffered and are still suffering in N.Sri Lanka. But from what I heard from some Sri Lankan Tamil friends, they are a lot more peaceful now and are relieved that LTTE is dead.

Everyone, in a democratic country, has the right to protest in whatever way he/she sees fit at what he perceives as injustice (and there was injustice) and no body has the right to label it as lame. Period.

They can protest all they want. But threatening the Bollywood guys to stop going to Sri Lanka is lame and they were just trying to score some political points. Except for Tamil Nadu no one in India cares about the Lankan Tamils. We should act accordingly.

No body threatened Amitabh that they would kill him.

He complied for his own commercial interests viz., Raavan. So if anyone is lame then it is Amitabh who is lame, not the Tamil Film industry.

We have our own priorities and being in the good books of Sinhalese is the least of that. And what you said is true, except for us no one really cares for the Tamils in SL.

They have a right to protest, but no one has a right to call the protest lame?

No they do not, especially one who has only a knowledge based on one-sided reporting and dont know what actually happened (or is happening) on ground.

SL have come out of a brutal episode of Indian Tamil sponsored terror... Its stabilizing at a rapid pace given the extent of damage caused.

That is no reason to support a cause against the entity that is SL - which what Amitabh did, which is what the Tamils forced him into - which is lame, whiny - a tantrum at best.

Tamil industry threatened that they wouldn't allow the release of the movies involving the actors who attend IFFA. Raavanan was being released shortly. So the Bachans chickened out.
BTW, do you really think the people in Tamil Nadu care so much about the issue?

Pretty much the biased, one-sided view I was referring to.

It also betrays the ignorance on what was the root cause of the Tamil insurgency and what pretty much happened during the fag end of the 'genocide' a.k.a War against Terror.

There is always google which can help you.

Even conceding your argument for its sake ,it is Amitabh who is lame, not the Tamil Film fraternity.

Yes...Maybe not all...But definitely many.

And I think the numbers dont matter, the cause does.

Now don't trivialize the issue by calling it "Indian Tamil sponsored terrorism". It is ignorant to say the least. It is a very tragic part of their history and we have to acknowledge it.

Its a loss for IIFA...Amitabh is too big a figure..Anyways last year's IIFA was the worst..
