India will receive the first of 80 Mi-17 transport helicopters from Russia by the end of this year, augmenting Air Force’s capability to carry out missions in high-altitude areas and relief
operations. “The first batch of choppers will arrive here from Russia by the end of this
year and the remaining are likely to be inducted in phased manner in next four years,” IAF officials told PTI here. In 2008, India had signed a deal with Russia to supply 80 Mi-17s to replace and augment its existing fleet of around 150 Mi-8 and Mi-17 medium-lift choppers, which have over five tonne load carrying capability and are also used to ferry troops and VIPs. The Air Force had felt the need of inducting more medium-lift choppers after a spate of natural disasters following the tsunami in December, 2004 and the heavy snowfall in Kashmir in 2005. Along with the induction of the new choppers, the IAF is also planning to upgrade over 50 choppers from its existing fleet of Mi-8s and Mi-17s. “This will enhance the life of these Russian-origin choppers by at least another ten years,” they said. In the mountainous areas, Mi-17s have been used to ferry troops and carry loads up to heights of 18,000 feet along the Line of Control. The Mi-17s are deployed for tasks like ferrying troops, airdropping supplies, evacuating casualties, search and rescue, and ferrying VIPs. It can carry 15 fully equipped troops and some of these choppers have been equipped with 57 mm rocket pods and machine guns.

Finally our orders will be getting fulfilled, so much on cards but yet to be delivered stuff is holding up. We will be in good shape by 2012.

1) Variant with new large door on the right side, kevlar plates around the cockpit area and engines. Some of them (but not all) have a loading ramp in place of the usual clamshell doors, and will load a vehicle up to the size of an SUV

2)fitted with four weapons pylons.

3) powered by two 3846-shp (2868-kW) Klimov TV3-117MT turboshaft engines

4) Night attack capability

5) Electronic jamming

6) digital/ glass cockpit

Also, it can carry load over 5 tonne on the other hand older MI 17 carries 3 tonne only.

As per news reports way back in 07-08, India had ordered or opted for Mi-17V5 version, which are Kazan built, as Mi-17s are built by two manufacturers, other one is Ulan Ude plant.

This one is the Mi-17V5 version built by Kazan helicopters.

I thought this would make interesting reading. Yes Mr Taimikhan is exactly right.

The Mi-17v5 differs from the Mi-171V in having a protruding ‘dolphin’ nose rather than the glassed-in round noses other Indian Mi-17s possess, more powerful 2,200hp TV3-117VM engines with new auxiliary power unit, and an extra port door on the starboard side. It shares the rear fuselage ramp that distinguishes both of these models from earlier Mi-17 versions. The improved Mi-17v7 variant reportedly features the 2,400hp VK-2500 engine with a digital FADEC for full performance in hot and high conditions. This would seem to make it more suitable for India – but media reports indicate that the order is for 80 Mi-17v5s

These characteristics are especially important on India’s mountainous northern and northeastern borders. India already operates both the Mi-17 and the improved 1V as the Pratap, and one should note that the country has about 150 Mi-17 and Mi-8 helicopters in service.

Does anyone have new infos about HALs plans for a medium 10-12t helicopter to replace the older Mi 8 and Mi 17?
The plan for a co-development was cancelled last year, but I didn't heared about it since than.

HAL is planning to have a Heavy Copter based on Dhruv.... Its not on paper yet, Army had passed its requirements to MOD, HAL took it up as per the Info... Not sure if we place a tender or Stick to HAL product
