NEW DELHI: In a move which is set to enhance unmanned warfare capability of Indian Air Force (IAF), the Defence Ministry on Tuesday approved the proposal to acquire 54 Israeli HAROP attack drones which can destroy the high-value enemy military targets completely by directly crashing into them.

It is to be noted that the IAF already has an inventory of around 110 of these drones, which are equipped with electro-optical sensors. These sensors allow the drones to move over high-value military targets such as surveillance bases and radar stations before destroying them.

"A proposal to acquire these 54 attack drones was approved by the Defence Ministry at a high-level meeting last week," defence sources told ANI.

IAF officials said that the approval would certainly add to the strength of the Air Force which is set to showcase the capabilities of the missile during the forthcoming Exercise Vayushakti where the drones would be shown destroying a simulated enemy radar target.

Indian and Israeli defence officials are also holding discussions over Project Cheetah under which almost all the drones of the three services would be turned into high-quality attack drones. Israel will also help in enhacing the surveillance capabilities of all drones.

Meanwhile, Indian security agencies are also developing indigenous combat drones which would be deployed on both the China and Pakistan border in the near future.

Combat drones are used by the American forces to target terrorist leaders in Afghanistan, Iraq and Pakistan.

Well, this is a dangerous predicament. These drones have been combat tested in Syria where they have been credited with a kill of a SA-22 Pantsir (source: https://www.almasdarnews.com/articl...em-destroyed-by-israel-was-allegedly-unarmed/). They have also been used in the Azerbaijani-Armenian conflict, with the Azeri's blowing up whole buses of Armenian troops going to the frontlines (source: https://www.israeldefense.co.il/en/content/azerbaijan-used-iais-harop-ucav).

They're quite useful & can be used in multiple different ways......quite deadly. Hopefully we can develop something similar to this. Would be useful in using as bunker busters or just suicide drones against any incursions against us from our Western neighbor (our dear brother Stan) :D.

But only 54? Does it suggest that the Indians might try to take some apart, reverse engineer them & develop their own?

You should have read the article , it says India already has 110 of these drones .

Its a great drone... Something pak needs to look into especially with anti radiation seekers

If sarkari dodos were good at that, we would have had a mini-air force of Heron UAVs by now of our own.

We still do have over 100+ Herons but they're imported.

That's still a pretty low number...more than half will be shot down or ecm'ed to not work properly in a war with Pakistan.

Seems like a pretty basic concept to me. Might be a lack of funding?

Military lobbies.

Not simplicity.

You see, everything moves through files.

But to move a file, every politician/bureaucrat has a lobbyist up his @$$ ready to make him stop indigenous projects through some bureaucratic hurdle.

This allows the lobbyists to sell imported weapons, even if there is an indigenous option available.

Many a time, even successful projects are scuttled away as 'failure' through a vast network of journalists, media-based "experts" and even a few corrupt military ranked officers.

They all take a cut in defence deals.

It is better from before under the current administration; which is why bureaucrats hate PM Modi who is making it difficult for their bribery to continue.

You should see how many hurdles were stacked against HAL Tejas (apart from technical limitations, in early 2000s).

Hmm so basically these are slow *** manual cruise missiles. Retaliation could be with babur cruise missiles and or suicide drones of our own.
