I think it will be a good decision in the long run.
The army needs to have a separate air wing comprising of transport aircraft and attack choppers like the Apache,LCH so that they dont depend on the airforce in times of war to transport troops,CAS etc.
But the primary function of securing the airspace,establishing air superiority and deep strike missions beyond enemy lines should rest with the IAF as Army entering the sector will affect the effectiveness of the IAF (too many cooks spoil the broth).
