Crash Landed Turkish Airlines Airbus A330 at TIA, Kathmandu​

KATHMANDU, MAR 05 - The Indian Air Force’s Hercules aircraft has landed at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) at 1:10 pm Thursday. The aircraft has brought an Aircraft Removal Kit, which will try and remove the Turkish Airline, Airbus A330, from the grassy shoulder.

Turkish Airlines had earlier on Wednesday taken initiatives and urged the Indian Air Force to send in its aircraft to remove the crashed Turkish Airliner jet.

The removal operation of the Turkish Airlines -which skidded off the runway with 224 passengers and 11 crew members onboard - will begin shortly, according to Teknath Sitoula, an airport official.

As a result of the accident TIA has been shut down today, as all international flights have been cancelled until 5 pm.

The Turkish Airlines plane had skidded off the runway and veered onto the grassy shoulder during landing at the TIA on Wednesday morning. Flight TK726 from Istanbul was carrying 224 people when it ploughed into the grassland on the left side of the runway at Kathmandu’s fog-covered airport at 7:45 am.

What exactly does the kit help in ?? Can't just crane or something move it

Nepal does not have cranes powerful enough to remove a large plane like the Airbus from the runway. They approached the Indian authorities to bring a crane of the Indian Air Force along with other associated equipment.

It would be much more practical and economical to source it to the IAF than to rope in the Turkish Air Force, Moreover due to that crash landing all of the international flights have been suspended at TIA, Nepal's only international airport. The sooner it is removed - the better for the airport authorities.

Turkish airlines were meant to fly out engineers and take care of this but for whatever reason we're unable to do so and thus the Turkish authorities requested the assistance of the GoI. India is the de facto "big brother" in that part of the world and often provides such assistance that is beyond the capabilities of the local authorities, they do it for the Maldivies, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and Nepal.

C130 carried the much needed aircraft removal kit to TIA - it will be those cranes and all which will do the job - not the C130 mate.
