Pakistan Muslim League-Zia (PML-Z) President Ijazul Haq admitted that he facilitated the process of getting President Asif Ali Zardari out of jail.
He was speaking on the Express 24/7 programme Face Off with Munizae Jahangir.
I was amazed when he asked me to do that (help Zardari), Haq said, adding that he talked to a couple of people for this.
I did not really go to them and say, do this. I said that I have been approached you dont have any cases against this guy, let him go, he said.
Zardari, who spent 11 years in jail on what he says are trumped up political charges, benefitted from a controversial amnesty deal between his wife, former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, and Pakistans military president Pervez Musharraf .
His government has since butted heads with the judiciary over old corruption charges.
The Supreme Court in September heard cases involving graft charges against the President in Swiss courts but no charges were made against him and his name was omitted from a list of National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) beneficiaries.
I played role in Zardari’s release: Ijazul Haq – The Express Tribune
