Samajwadi Party leader and UP Cabinet Minister Azam Khan today stirred up a hornet's nest in Agra, when he supported the Hindu claim on the Taj Mahal and challenged the Shiv Sena to come and try to demolish it like they demolished Babri Mosque.
Azam Khan who was in Agra to chair a review meeting was talking to the media about his views on the current political scenario in the country.
Asked about his views on the claims of a select group of historians and the Shiv Sena about the Taj Mahal being 'Tejomahalay', a temple for Lord Shiva, Khan said that he too supported the Hindu claim on the Taj Mahal and if the Shiv Sena dares, it can go and demolish the Taj Mahal just like they did with the Babri Mosque.
He said that the Babri Mosque demolition did not hurt Islam, but it was a fact that whenever temples went down, Hindus have turned against Muslims.
Asked if he had any desire of becoming the deputy Chief Minister of the state, Khan said,"If a tea-vendor can become the Prime Minister, then I should also start selling tea to become the PM of the country?" He said that everyone in the Samajwadi Party was already fulfilling the role he had in the party and there was no dissent. Answering a question about the lack of good people in the party, Khan said, "Where are good people found in the country?"
Terming the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) as mythical character 'Kans' and JNU student Kanhaiyya as 'Krishna' Azam Khan, "Kanhaiyya will bring about the end of the RSS and its fake nationalist ideology. The worshippers of Nathuram Godse should not teach nationalism to the country."
When his opinion was sought about the rising influence of Asaduddin Owaisi and his political party All India Majlis ittehadul Muslimeen in Uttar Pradesh, Azam Khan said, "Owaisi should make and eat his Biryani in Hyderabad and forget UP."
Enraged by Azam Khan's opinion on the Taj Mahal, Agra muslims certified him insane and said that when Azam should visit mental asylum for treatment. Bhartiya Muslim Vikas Parishad chairman Sami Agai said, "There was a time when Azam Khan was a member of the Babri Masjid Action Committee and a well-wisher of Muslim rights and now the same person is advocating for demolition of the Taj Mahal, when he is fully aware that the Holy Quran is inscribed on the Taj Mahal and even talking about the demolition of the monument is sacrilege in the eyes of Islam."
He said that whatever development Agra has seen since Independence, is largely because of the Taj Mahal and by inviting the Shiv Sena to demolish the Taj Mahal, Azam Khan has proved that he has no connection with the Urban Development ministry which he holds so dear to him.
Jamiatul-Quresh chairman Mohd. Sharif Qureshi said, "Azam Khan is making communal statements to disturb the harmony of the state by commenting on Muslim and Hindu affairs. Such a leader should be immediately expelled from the UP Cabinet by Chief MinisterAkhilesh Yadav."
UP Congress Minority Cell Vice Chairman Haji Jamiluddin Qureshi said that Agra is the city of Sulh-e-kul and if someone makes communal statements in this city which has been famous for its communal harmony, he is definitely insane and needs proper mental treatment.
