Well, not just found out, I was noticed about a month ago, the army is putting me up for another Silver Star medal for what I did in Iraq 13 years ago LOL....I already had one for pulling my soldier out of a burning building during a firefight, now I have to schedule an interview with the DoD investigator because I am the ranking officer of my group during that action.

13 years after the action? Lol......this is crazy...I thought that was over and I don't even remember much what I did to begin with....

Wish me luck :) If I get it I will get a Silver Star with a bronze oak leaf cluster

What else do you get with the medal?

Best of Luck.

What else do you get with the medal?

Thanks.

Not sure about today, but when I got my first Silver Star a decade ago, I had a photo op with a Lt Gen, 3 days off and a commendation certificate presented to me along with the medal and that's it. Not sure about it now.

but getting a silver star won't have financial compensation....like a pension or anything else.

Dua with medal :D

What is a Dua?

Thanks.

thanks, well, this is not really I am longing for so much, more of a surprise than anything else, I don't even know what do I wear if I get the medal, but I guess that is a question long way off.

Anyway, where have you been? Why you aren't replying to my quote lately??

In GCC as well as in Pakistan, Medals are usually accompanied with promotion, cash, or land, depending upon the medal being awarded. Hence my question.

Nonetheless, what you reminded me of, is the fact you did your duty and don't even remember it. That is how true soldiers are, they do their job and move on.

Congratulations to you Brother, you deserve it!

Cash and Land? Man, I should have served the Pakistani Army.

Silver Star is the third highest award for a soldier (only Medal of Honor (MOH) and Distinguish Service Cross (DSC) preceded it) I don't think there are any other award to go with it, however I do think if you are on government pension, they will give you a $20 or so increase per month for the award. But as I wasn't retired so I don't think I get anything other than the medal and I think they will cheap out on the certificate as well...

and yeah, I too am surprise when I have received a letter telling me to report to a DoD investigator and arrange for an interview, I was thinking I was involved in a war crime or some sort originally, only after I have arrange the interview I found out it was for a medal...

I think most of us don't think about medal that much when we are over there, all I want is to serve my tour and go home, I don't do anything I don't need to because I want to get a MOH or DSC or something like that. That's why I don't really remember, because for me, that day is just another day I was there, not much of a different for me to remember that day specifically.

Thanks for your support, I still not 100% sure I will get it. they may downgrade the award or not even giving me one if they think my action has not warranted one, but we will find out soon enough.

congrats..

Thanks

Well. This is Pakistan. Depending on your rank and medal you'd get 1˜4 kanal of land in cantonment, or agricultural land, commercially worth anything between USD100,000 to USD2,000,000 (depending on how you get along with senior officers).

And for non-commissioned rank, you'd get USD500 - USD5,000. And if you were sadly in Police service or comparable, you'd get a photo op with some senior officer, and if you were very very lucky and alive, some high up from District Management would visit your dwelling! :D

Not just Pakistan but most ex-Brtish colonizes. It is a way of saying "Thank You for your service".

A friend of mine, who as a young Lt. in PA, performed extremely well in a border skirmish, and saved a fellow soldiers life, was awarded commercial land in his home town - Karachi. Which he donated to the fallen of his unit.

Soldiers are a breed apart, they don't think about monetary benefits or medals, when they ride into battle. All they think about it doing their jobs and getting out. GIGO - Get In Get Out.

Whether you get the medal or not, you did your duty. This is what matters. This is the inner strength, that will get you through a lot of tough battles in life. Stand tall!

Do keep us posted.

Best Regards
