NEW DELHI: Huawei, the world’s second-largest phone maker, will begin manufacturing mobile phones in India from next year as the $150 billion Chinese giant plans to open 1,000 company-branded stores across the country to gain a foothold in the market.

Jim Xu, Global VP for Huawei’s consumer business group which accounted for sales of $52 billion last year, said that while being a “tough and competitive market”, India remains one of the most lucrative destination globally for smartphone and electronics device makers.

“We look at India strategically and now intend to grow our presence through launch of devices in the mid- and premium-end of the market,” Xu told TOI.

Huawei group is the largest device maker in China, the world’s biggest smartphone market, and accounted for global sales of 153 million in 2017. “Apart from China, we are witnessing a strong growth across many markets including Europe where we have a nearly 20% stake in overall smartphone sales.”

The company is already present in India through its sub-brand Honor, which is sold through the online channels. Xu said that now Huawei – which is currently importing limited number of handsets here - plans to up the ante and for this it will look at local manufacturing, especially in view of the near-20% duty that is imposed on imported devices.

“Yes definitely, we plan to go for local manufacturing. We plan to do this in partnership with our manufacturing partner Flex that has a factory in Chennai.”

Xu said that apart from having a local presence, Huawei also plans a marketing and retail blitzkrieg in India. “We intend to spend around $100 million in the initial phase as part of our outreach investment. Apart from this, we intend to have company-operated as well as partner-owned exclusive stores with plans to open 1,000 such outlets in the next 2-3 years.”

Does this meaning just assembling the cell phones or building a complete infrastructure that involves manufacturing microprocessors too??

Honor is one of the best companies out there. Exceptional phones, at competitive prices. They would be number one soon.
