As many are aware most communication is none-verbal, up to 70%. When most people lie they give away tell tale signs, in other words, kinesics which I mostly uncontrollable none-verbal behavior betrays your secrets.

Here is indications of deception:

* Increased body movements, usually touching the face, running fingers through hair, and tightening up the body, this includes clinching fists or fettling with fingers and crossing hands. Head down, body slumped if sitting.

* Changes in breathing
* perspiration
* dry mouth
* swallowing
* wetting lips
* dilating pupils
*belching
*clearing throat
*foam at corner of mouth
* yawn
* adams apple moves
*carotid artery is large
* tone of voice changes

Overly aggressive, overly friendly, crying, or mood swing is also common.

some of what you mentioned above could be reason of psychological problems such as depression, anxiety, etc...

exactly
they can be helpful measures to detect lies but physical condition is very important to be kept in mind.

For example If a person is "yawning" too much does not mean he is lying, it could also mean he didn't sleep well last night :rofl:

Imagine someone clearing his throat and bunch of cops come and claim "Deception Detected". :rofl:

These are interrogation/interview techniques, before someone attempts to question a person they evaluate their mood, behavior and body language. Simply put someone very familiar with interrogation, perhaps someone that does it for a living will be able to distinguish depression.

Another factor in detecting lies is gaining someone's trust in order to get them to speak to you, and asking questions in a tricky manner.

It is not one sign that gives a person away it is many, a yawn, running fingers through the hair, looking down ect. They teach this at most intelligence agencies, I got this from an instructor that had 25 years of intelligence service and much of what he did was interrogations.

Some of what you mentioned:

dry mouth--It could be, because person is nervous. but it doesn't make him guilty

clearing throat--that doesn't prove much!

Changes in breathing--Again could be sign of anxiety, nervousness, etc...

adams apple moves---well.....technically, girls don't have an adams apple. :D

.
Sir, how will you know that the carotid artery is "large"? Do you mean to say increased pulsations visible in the carotid triangle region?

Also, adam's apple moves whenever one degluts, so swollowing and this movement of adam's apple is synonymous.

Rest of them are correct.

@ DesiGuy,

Nothing will "prove" deception except a confession from the deceiver. However, all these signs, when appearing together, raise the probability of deception significantly.

Girls do not have a prominent Adam's apple (thyroid cartilage to be accurate) though it can be observed by a trained person

As I said it is not one or two things that give a person away. They also do take nervousness into account. There is also techniques to make even a nervous person comfortable, what I covered so far is just a small part of it, trust me my old instructor would know about your **** stash and weather or not you are a cheater :disagree:

More pulsation, larger, ect

Swollowing and a bobulating adams apple is synonymous but some people tense up in the troat.

@ganimi kawa

I think Girls have something similar to an Adam's Apple but it's not the same thing. It's the same organ, but it isn't considered an Adam's Apple.

bu ti could be wrong.

well, you are quiet right, but they are not always successful, are they?

I'm not an interigator, but my instructor told me that these technics work most of the time, a sociopath is the most difficult to detect.

@ desiguy, adam's apple is a term used for the prominent thyroid cartilage of adult males (note that boys lack this feature). But even in women it can be observed by those who are trained, that is the point I'm trying to make.

@pltdM3, If a guy tenses up his throught, he is using the strap muscles and platysma, a dead give away to deception.

Also sweating especially in the extremities is a very good sign as it is associated with the sympathetic system over-activity.

About detection of sociopaths, we can have a nice long discussion. Interesting stuff that is!
