LTTE extorted money from Sri Lankan Tamils to fund their insurgency -- on top of criminal activities -- especially those Tamils who lived and worked overseas. Those who did not help the "cause" were threatened with their lives or the lives of their families.

Fair enough but as far as Sri lanka is concerned this danger you speak of is a fairly recent phenomenon.. Australia is a young nation state so cant talk in that perspective

As i said in Sri Lanka many Muslim communities have lived for millennia well integrated to the wider society peacefully practicing their faith, It is not until the late 90's did the more puritanical and often violent streams of Islam started to spread within the Sri Lanka Muslim community which it self consists of multi ethnic communities like the Tamil Muslims from South India, Moors from North Africa and Middle East, Malays from SE Asia, Báhai, Memons etc etc.. And with the petro dollar funding came Wahhabism partly by Saudi funded radicals partly bought back from the middle East by Thousands of Lankans employed there.. That all started the self segregation (Clothes, Social interaction etc..) violence against other more secular sects like mainstream mosques and Sufi's, Advancing in to demands to the state to accommodate more fundamentalist laws hitherto didn't exist in the country and contravening universal human rights and civil law of the country

Again the extremist fundamentalist practices seem to be gaining ground mainly within the Tamil Muslim community not so much within the others and certainly not with the Malay's.. So i wouldn't still generalize the whole Muslim community as a threat to the society and other communities because still the vast majority of the people are peace loving ordinary folk

The level of military and intel Co-operations between SL and Pakistan was also one of key factor in this success.
