How safe is Bangladesh for travellers?

Good god, every single crime that happens = 100% reported to the police to be logged....and thus 100% can be compared across countries.

Hows the rape rate looking for BD compared to India....according to the be all end all UNODC? You excluded it by accident or on purpose?....given thats what half you lot here attack India on first chance you get.

@Ashes
I agree rape is a problem in BD, but you're the first person to bring it up ITT. Based on the context of this thread I don't see what @Mage said was wrong.

Indians national sports in Rape. They even rape foreign women, hell they even don't spare Cow which is their god. No wonder, BHARAT MATA makes the top 10 AIDS-affected country list. HAIL AIDS affected BHARAT MATA...

The topic of the thread is "how safe is BD for travellers". Its disingenuous to bring up only UNODC homicide rate (even if theoretically recorded by same quality of standards for arguments sake) for comparison right?....given a myriad of other crimes are relevant to traveller safety overall.

Didn't say it's wrong per se, just cherry picking what makes BD look better but not that which makes BD look worse is very faulty.

For me, the sea opened and I came out of a yellow submarine.

LOL. Sakra has her forces arrayed, watch out!

Well in terms of rape I don't think that should be a huge risk for a traveller. I've looked at many rape cases in BD and they seem to fit a certain pattern. There is a noticeable power divide between the perpetrators and victims. The common perpetrators either have links to security forces, politicians, or are of the upper, more wealthier class while the victims are poor and powerless people. Another pattern is related to more conservative and rural parts of the country where it's the victim being blamed and not the perpetrator.

For a traveller or they should be able to avoid this as the law will certainly go for arresting and prosecuting the perpetrator if the victim happens to be a traveller. We see this to be the case with other crimes against foreigners in BD. Granted I admit this is just an educated guess as I don't think I've come across a rape incident against a foreigner in BD.

Also, I certainly don't mind you tagging me in your posts but must it be against posters I get along with?

I'm glad someone got the reference.

How many foreigners visit Bangladesh in the first place ?
Not many...very few If I'm being honest.
0 out of 5, percentage wise is 0.
0 out of a billion, percentage wise is still 0.

Perception is half of reality. India always comes up when people are talking about dangerous place for women. Bangladesh isn't known to the world. That saves it from having a lot of bad rep.

As a whole BD is not a safe place for anybody. Everybody should take local guide before visiting remote places regardless. Robbing and mugging are very common.
In my opinion, this holds true for all of the subcontinent. I bet all of our parents advise us not to accept chaa-biskut from hawkers and strangers in general when undertaking a train journey and such.
