Starting from the day of his oath-taking as prime minister last week, new prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s facial impressions display as if he is in a deep reflective mood, always absorbed in his thoughts, not much thrilled even over earning the distinction of acquiring this dream slot for the third time.

There are different possible reasons behind his unique facial impressions.

But it will be instructive to first quote a Tweet by his daughter, Maryam Nawaz, who said the other day that he is not feeling well as he has flu and chest infection.

Not even once did Nawaz Sharif have a slightly relaxed feeling let alone a minor smile during the two swearing-in ceremonies of his own and his federal cabinet at the Presidency. He was apparently ill at ease simply because of the person who administered the oath.

Even when President Asif Ali Zardari oddly robustly shook Nawaz Sharif’s hands after his formal installation as prime minister, it appeared as if he was trying to uproot them. The PML-N chief had no comfortable moment. He remained sombre, thoughtful and unruffled.

Old-timers, who have closely observed the constant ascendancy of Nawaz Sharif in the political arena and know his temperament well, say he is not the kind of person who can put his inner feelings out of sight in different situations. His face always tells the whole story.

For example, they say, the reading of his facial impressions clearly showed that he was absolutely uneasy when Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Javed Hashmi was ‘congratulating’ him on his election as prime minister in the National Assembly.

The disquiet he felt while being in the obligatory company of Zardari was caused by the fact that he neither wants to face the president nor did he wish to have any discussion, even perfunctory, with him due to his track record and particular political wheeling-dealing against him for years.

But at the same time Nawaz Sharif wanted to strictly follow the mandatory constitutional obligations like taking oath from Zardari, and was not reluctant to visit the Presidency for such functions.

But he doesn’t cherish to go beyond these essential calls with the objective of improving his relations with the president.

Unlike PTI chairman Imran Khan, he declared much before the May 11 general elections that he would not be averse to taking oath from the elected President, Zardari.

Only facial reading experts can precisely interpret the messages conveyed by Nawaz Sharif’s facial impressions but it is quite evident that he definitely remains thoughtful and reflective due to the monumental crises and problems that he has inherited to rectify matching high public expectations that were expressed through the electoral mandate given to him on May 11.

He seems lost in thought in view of the available meagre financial resources to cope with titanic predicaments and troubles that were either created or intensified during the last five years. He appears to be burdened with the heavy agenda to deliver, and deliver in the shortest possible time to alleviate the sufferings of the teeming millions.

Nawaz Sharif, who traversed a long journey - from the dark dungeon to the Prime Minister’s House - to obtain this position for the third time only owing to the public mandate, seems to be indebted to the people for this, and is burdened with a heavy load to do something substantial for them quickly.
