I studied 2 years at USA. I happened to be at Newark New Jursey .
Every morning I woke up because of police siren. I thought perhaps this happened just in this city
My experience with African American people on the street of Newark was quite bad. They always ask for some changes, which actually means they ask for free money. Well educated African American in my school were good people.

I just went to Columbus Ohio and stay there for 2 weeks.
Many morning I wake up because of police siren.
During my stay in Columbus Ohio, TV news show again shooting in school.

I see many movies, there are a lot of sex crime.
I heard that every one can have a gun, rifles.

I have been thinking/planning whether to send my children to study at U.S high school.
I just feel not save.
Please advice.

Not all states are like that.

Anybody other than you would have experienced the same in America.

Crime is everywhere, though in America you do have violent crime compared with European nations. One thing America needs to do is seriously control the firearms. It's just crazy that a developed society like theirs has so many murders every day.

While it's true the US crime rate is high compared to other OECD nations, some common sense will ameliorate the situation. As in any sort of travel, do your research. Avoid bad neighborhoods. Don't walk in areas that are not well-lit at night, and try not to walk around alone at night.

Most of the large cities (NYC, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Boston, etc.) have very large "safe" areas, and the "no-go" areas are well-known. For example, don't go to Chicago's south side, or south central LA. San Francisco has a lot of beggars, but as long as you stay away from Oakland, you should be fine. Boston/Cambridge tends to be much safer in general, and has a very large college student population due to the high density of colleges and universities, but as with any other place, there are good neighborhoods, and there are bad neighborhoods.

Sadly, Newark is not generally regarded as a "safe" city, so that might have contributed to your discomfort.

Finally, suburbs tend to be much safer than urban areas (and often have better schools as well).

As LeveragedBuyout mentioned it all depends upon where you are.

You should look at the US as similar to the EU. Some states do better than others. Some have a higher standard of living than others. Some have higher crime too. But all have their "pockets" of bad areas. Some more pockets and bigger than others.

Usually the high crime areas are pockets in cities or some of their immediate neighboring areas. Suburbs tend to be much safer.

Any area where the numbers of renters far exceeds the number of owners usually has a higher crime rate.

I find this to be true, not once did I feel unsafe in the US. Of course I didn't go to the projects, or Texas, but still very safe.

Same is true anywhere really. Proximity to South America is a blessing and a curse for you guys. Good in Foreign relations bad in domestic policies.

I think crime rate in US was much worse in the 90s, so it has been improving steadily
