How come Taiwan entertainers are so popular in China

I think the Mainland show is the best, Taiwan is Second and HK ranks the last
I agree. Since you live in HK what exactly happened in the 90s that caused HK series to become bad? I remember in the 80s hk series had the best theme songs and fight choreography...

A big market also means a big pool of talent, which translates to greater competition. So I wouldn't say that it's easy to be successful there. Who knows that for every successful singer, there are 20 unsuccessful ones?
I think you and TaiShang both are right. There are a lots of unsuccessful examples where they have to retreat back to HK. Also the mainland market is huge enough to have different kind of audiences, so luckily William Chan has a chance there. Since the Mainland is starting to develop, the sooner they go to the mainland market, the better chance they have; the more developed market, the more competition they face from the local talents.

If you are talking about the TV drama, I would say that the monopoly of TVB causes the overall decline of the TV dramas. Also with the low pay from the TVB, many talents leave for the mainland market as the same case in the movie industry. Moreover, the taste of HK audiences have been changed, the HK house-wifes now like the topic of "爭產" or "fighting within a family" more. While the younger generation now have more choice to choose from, like from China, American and Korean. Furthermore, the power struggle among the factions in TVB also contributes to the casting of the less talented actors for their drama. However, I do believe that the HK drama is still better than the Taiwanese one, while the Taiwanese entertainment show is far better than the one from HK.
As you mentioned the decline of the theme songs, I think this is because TVB has made enemies of the largest 4 music companies in HK, so TVB can only use their own staffs and singers for their songs, except from Emperor Group "英皇".

Good point and it should be so. Lots of flare-ups quickly disappear. But, I am not really much familiar with the industry. All I know is what I see on TV. We watch Mainland programs on daily basis, from dramas to reality shows.

TVB (here it is TVBS) is probably the most popular news channel here. Also, their variety of programs are quite in high demand. I especially like their travel programs.

Really!! Is this because Taiwanese news are biased according to the background? So TVBS appears to be more neutral? BTW, I mean no disrespect.

We HK people like the cooking show more, and Taiwanese shows have many of them.

TW entertainers are popular in China because Chinese leaders portray TW entertainers positively. It wasn't always that way. From 1949-1976, TW entertainers were not popular at all in China, and were seen as decadent. In fact, you were more likely to hear about Romanian entertainers rather than Taiwanese.

The reason today's Chinese leaders popularize TW entertainers is not because TW entertainers are entertaining, it's because Chinese leaders want to give concesions to TW entertainers in hopes that TW entertainers will support unification. They are buying support. But using entertainment to achieve political goals is not unique to China, and happens all over the world. If you look at Hollywood films, you often see British actors portraying Amerikan characters. The reason why they (Amerikan oligarky) do this, is also to give concesions to British actors, and gain the political support of the British oligarky in return.

This doesn't always work though, especially for China. In 2014, when Hongers took to the street to riot, a lot of HK actors (despite the concesions they were given on the mainland) came out to publicly supported the anti Chinese riots, and denounce the central goverment. Some of them even participated in the rioting. Some of the celebrities were more famous than others. Denise Ho, Chapman To, Deserts Xuan, Albert Leung, Nick Cheung, and Karena Lam were some of the less famous supporters. Famous celebrities such as Tony Leung, and Chow Yun-fat were also amongst the anti Chinese movements. This just goes to show that soft power, without hard power to back it up, is ineffective.

Definitely so (although we all sense TVBS still favors the Blue Camp/Kuomintang).

But, some pro-Green stations are indeed hilarious. They make a typhoon out of a small wave.
