DAWN.COM | World | Holbrooke unsure if Pakistan against Afghan Taliban

Friday, 05 Mar, 2010

WASHINGTON: US special envoy Richard Holbrooke said in an interview with the Financial Times that he is agnostic about whether Pakistan had decisively turned against the Afghan Taliban.

Holbrooke made the comment in relation to Pakistan’s arrest of the Afghan Taliban’s operational commander Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar.

He said he was not prepared to make a judgement on whether relations between the United States and Pakistan had turned a corner after Baradar’s arrest.

Holbrooke declined to say whether the US was getting good intelligence from the joint interrogation of Mullah Baradar. But he said he had "no problems" with the Lahore High Court’s denial of a request last week to transfer the Taliban commander to Afghanistan.

Regarding military operations in Afghanistan, Holbrooke said the US and its allies faced a "daunting" task there and "it is much too early" to predict how the situation will turn out. — DawnNews

Press Releases 2010 : Embassy in New Delhi of the United States of America

Statement by Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan Richard C Holbrooke

I regret any misunderstanding caused by my comments on the recent terrorist attack in Kabul, which claimed the lives of 6 Indians and at least ten citizens of other nations. I did not say Indians were not the target, but that initially it looked like the target was not an official Indian facility. Early reports on events like this are often unreliable, and I try not to jump to conclusions. We all know that Indian citizens have and continue to be targeted by terrorists, including inside Afghanistan. My heart goes out to the families of all of the victims.

The Afghan people and international community deeply appreciate the very substantial humanitarian and reconstruction assistance that India provides Afghanistan. The willingness of India to take risks and make sacrifices to help Afghanistan is testament to India's commitment global peace and prosperity and a vital part of the international commitment to Afghanistan's future.

Thanks for the appreciation Mr Hallbrook. . Why the fu ck are we helping them. Even after capture of baradar he is still confused. I hope we wont capture anymore AT to clear your confusion.

you know when crank gets whacked up in the face by a bully, he still remains unsure why he was whacked and by whome ..!
May be the US is comfortable in acting in denial of the fact that Pakistan cought these Afghan Taliban HVTs .May be they want Pakistan to set itself on opposite track . . . .!

.
Good cop bad cop routine - the US wants to ensure it keeps a degree of pressure on Pakistan to ensure that eventually the PA takes on North Waziristan.

He is essentially repeating the same thing he first said in diplomatese ...

He didn't indicate, in that statement at lease, that the target was deliberately chosen because it was Indian.

India is desperate to save the waning attention of the US which is the reason why it is 'projecting' itself as a defenseless victim! What a Sham but then again, India's only thriving industry these days is MOVIES, DRAMA & ACTING!!

Like I have said before, India wanted the US to stay in Afghanistan and shun the Talibaans. Unfortunately both bets have flipped on their heads as Obama has already announced US forces withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2011 and Holbrooke and ISAF and UN want to 'talk' to the Talibaans by recognizing them as a real force to contend with.

I can only imagine what will happen to Karzai and his band of ex-Northern Alliance, Anti-Pakistani merry men in the government once US is outta here! The same goes for the so called Indian lot in Afghanistan.

Hollbroke has a habbit of saying something in India, then changing his statement in Pakistan and when goes to Afghanistan, there is another version of his statement.

Seems like another Bush.

It is done by all diplomats, mostly US because they are managing relationship with set of nations having conflicting interest.

.
if holbrooke is unsure if pakistan is against afghan taliban or not then why are they still backing us uo and saying that keep on fighting
the point is that they really dont know what they are doing . they are right now blinded , these guys will regret the day they were born when we decide to wake up

.
Lol this guy is a joke, he'll say one thing one day and compleletly go back on it thE next day
