Hi,

Seems like the helmets equipped with HMD's are not a safe bet for pilots with not so strong neck muscles---.

Helmets with HMD are heavier than conventional pilot helmets & in case of a deployment of an ejection seat from an aircraft may result in severe injuries to pilot's neck due to the weight of the helmet and resulting forces produced due to accelerated motion.

It could possibly result in the broken neck of the pilot or severe injuries to the neck.

The first article talks about minimum body weight for a pilot wearing HMD.

The other articles are informative as well---.

Looks like that pretty soon we would be seeing pilots with thick strong necks flying the modern aircrafts with HMD's

Radar with side antennas is ergonomically better than Helmet mounted system. Not only in ejection but also in looking for targets consistently in case of engagement as well as with the neck movement more than desired.

Side mounted radar antennas won't cue-in IR homing munitions.

It also acknowledged an "elevated level of risk" for pilots between 136 and 165 pounds.

For Pakistanis, 165 lbs == 75 kg, which is quite high for a pilot 5'6" tall as it means overweight acc. to BMI
So a pilot should have a minimum height of 5'9" or taller.

HMD's and NVG's can aldo cause spatial disorientation.

Perhaps why Russians used HMS rather than HMDs. A light HMD is also possible. Look at Google glass. A simplified, light HMD that does not come with all the bells and whistles, and has a simple sighting mechanism, similar to the Russian solution should stay relatively light weight.

I think the point that MK has raised so interestingly is that HMDs are not an end all or be all. Perhaps they are a technology that has its pros and cons, and the solution may always not be to get an HMD.

Sorry it was meant as a joke only. Sorry if it hurts your feeling. Will edit the post and all other posts that were effected due to my post about Altaf.
Why should you?
Arent traitors made fun of everywhere in the world.

What is the increase in weight?
I will be minimium in terms of Kg but if you talk in terms of % weight increase it will be significant. Helmet equipped with HMD will weight around 2.60 to 2.80 Kg. If a remember correctly a study recently supported a 150-200 gram reduction in weight to make it safe (that is around 7.5% appx). Without HMD the weight of Helmet will be under 2Kg.

Exactly my point. Without knowing the weights and the change caused by the HMD, one cannot say anything. Mitigation measures would depend on the numbers.
