After Riyaz Naikoo's killing, Hizbul Mujahideen appoints Ghazi Haider as new chief

MAY 11 2020

After the killing of Riyaz Naikoo, Hizbul Mujahideen has reportedly appointed 26-year-old Saifullah Mir aka Ghazi Haider as the new chief of the indigenous militant outfit in Jammu and Kashmir.

Mir’s appointment to lead the Hizbul was announced by Saleem Hashmi, Azad Kashmir (Azad Kashmir) based spokesperson of the outfit. Hashmi, also named Zafar-ul-Islam, has been appointed as deputy to Mir while another militant, Abu Tariq Bhai, was nominated as his chief military adviser.

Mir, a 12th standard pass out, who hails from Malangpora in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district, was a close aide of Naikoo and was given the name Ghazi Haider. Naikoo, who had taken over as chief of the Hizbul in early 2017, was killed by security forces last Wednesday in his native village Bighpora in Pulwama. Naikoo was one of the longest surviving militants in Kashmir and was active since 2012.

Mir, who also goes by ‘Doctor Saif’ code name because he treated injured militants, was recruited by Naikoo in 2014 and came on the radar of security agencies in 2017. According to police records, Mir was the so-called district commander of the Hizbul in Pulwama before being elevated as so-called chief after the death of his mentor Naikoo.

Formed in 1989, the Hizbul is one of the largest and oldest militant groups operating in Kashmir. The outfit is led by Specially Designated Global Terrorist Mohammad Yusuf Shah, also known as Syed Salahuddin, who is based in the Azad Kashmir.

A senior police officer told DH that after Naikoo’s death, Junaid Ashraf Sehrai (30), son of Ashraf Sehrai, a successor of hardline separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani, is the only known face still active in Kashmir. “The Hizbul would have appointed him as the new chief, but as he would have come in the radar of security agencies, the outfit decided to appoint Ghazi Haider,” he said.

“The other reason for appointing Ghazi Haider as chief is that he is familiar with Riyaz Naikoo’s network and activities to raise funds and recruit local boys into the militancy”.

During the previous Kashmir uprisings, Hizbul Mujahideen was the most feared fighter group in the valley. Then they went into obscurity. Now all of sudden they are in news again, meaning shi.t is about to hit the fan in Occupied Kashmir big time.

Pakistan isn't given much credit for using its influence to get the Kashmiri groups to pull back on their fight against Indian occupation in Indian Occupied Jammu & Kashmir. Much of this reduction was achieved in the decades before Modi came to power for the first time, and even during his first term it was on the backburner, with mostly non-combatants leading largely non-violent protests (stone throwing etc which is pretty normal for South Asia).

Indian security forces under the BJP overreacted - the use of pellet guns, increased atrocities, torturing, maiming and killing protesters or those suspected to be protesters.

And then of course came the revocation of Article 370, the lockdown that still continues and essentially putting into motion the BJP plan to perpetrate demographic genocide in J&K.

Actually Mushy boy despite his harakiri at Kargil is given credit for opening up of the LoC and reducing armed support to militants. He saw the writing on the wall that they days of armed low intensity conflict were over. But he was deposed or forced to leave I guess.

It was still all hunky dory till 26/11 though. Not even Kargil was as much of a catalyst as 26/11 was in getting an entire generation of Indians to absolutely loathe and revile Pakistan.

He wasn't (justifiably) acceptable as another round of elections took place and democracy was given another chance in 2008.

Even now, the fact that he hasn't been convicted & imprisoned rankles many pro-democracy advocates and political parties in Pakistan.

As opposed to meat eating secularists?

Meat eating or looking any different from sharma and Varma is felony punishable by mob lynching. Iam afraid non sharma and Varma won't be able to uphold such veggie Constitution for too long.

LOL. You do realize 70% of Indians eat meat.

Yeah it depends upon the risk factor and availability of chicken, chicken, chicken or frogs in case chicken and veggies are out of reach.

The way it's being reported, it's like Apple has just appointed a new CEO.

Well can't really blame this lot, this is all they can produce. Hizbul is their Apple and this Ghazi whatever their Steve Jobs.
