HIP Exclusive: CEO of ARY Digital, Jerjees Seja talks about Pakistani cinema
"We hope to keep upping the benchmark for the industry as we enter 2017," says Jerjees Seja
HIP DESK ABOUT 8 HOURS AGO
Reviving an entire industry is not easy, it'll take commitment and continuous effort and that is something our local filmmakers know for a fact. It hasn't been easy with no Bollywood movies contributing to the cinema business in the past three months. Yet, there have been 11 local releases, out of which the highest grossing were by ARY Films.
CEO of ARY Jerjees Seja talks about ARY Films and Dramas
ARY is leading the market with such a huge and impressive margin. When it comes to the revival of Pakistani Cinema, most of the credit does indeed go to ARY alone as it is the most influential and prominent contributor so far.
ARY Continues to Support Pakistani Cinema During the Struggle
We asked JJ on how he feels about the achievement and he replied, "Forecasted revenues were much higher, however, due to the Bollywood ban and drop in regular cinema goers the business has been affected."
"We expected Lahore Se Aagay and Dobara Phir Se to do bigger business than they already have. On the other hand, we're extremely happy to announce that 3 Bahadur 2 has done exceptionally well becoming the biggest animated grosser ever in Pakistan," he added.
The competition usually disagrees with the numbers and many have also gone to the extent to say that ARY manipulates the figures. Just to resolve all differences, we asked JJ for his reply.
He very calmly said, "Who are these people? Why would anyone say such a thing, and if they do, I'd like them to back it with proof. It's unfair to label and defame. Pakistani cinema is struggling and it's best if we all try to make good movies instead of criticising each other."
"The ARY Films team is extremely proud of the work we have been doing under the Made in Pakistan umbrella in the last five years for the revival of cinema and we hope to keep upping the benchmark for the industry as we enter 2017. Punjab Nahi Jaongi has completed shooting and Jawani Phir Nahi Aani is about to begin. There is a lot to look forward to this year, it will be interesting and we hope to achieve our goals," he further shared.
3 Bahadur 2 is a big hit!
While the industry is already suffering huge losses and a major downfall, the government continues to add to the pressure. As per reports, Punjab Government is going to burden the cinemas operating in the province with an ‘Entertainment Tax’. The 65% duty on admission tickets will most likely cause an increase in ticket prices from Rs500 to Rs825.
"The government is being non-supportive and non-understanding, it needs to play its part in making the situation easier for the industry in these crucial times. Adding tax will only worsen the situation and further add to the decline," concluded the CEO of ARY digital.
Despite the position and status, the CEO of one of Pakistan’s largest television networks – the ARY Digital Network is one gem of a person and his personality speaks volumes for his success. We wish him and his network all the best for their future endeavours.
