They came here from abroad to work among rural children but the two women in their mid-twenties left the country after being allegedly raped in an eucalyptus grove near Lakshmipura in Anekal taluk on January 24.
They were staying in a social service centre and went out for a walk that evening. Four youths dragged them to the grove and raped them. Police arrested Imran Pasha, who repairs almirahs, Ejaz Ahamed, a welder, Mohan and Narayanaswamy, both agricultural labourers.
The women had come to Bangalore to participate in community service as part of an academic programme. They were teaching hygiene to the rural poor and stayed in a religious centre.
"The women stayed there for around 10 days. Since they were well received by people, they may not have anticipated any trouble and that's why went for a walk on isolated roads,'' sources said.
After the incident, they returned to their camp and told the head of the centre who informed police. Initially, they refused to lodge a complaint. "Police convinced them that neither the incident nor their identities would be revealed," sources said. The women could not recall the faces of the assaulters and everyone looked similar. "That's the main reason why it took so long to arrest the four men," sources added.
