Mumbai Muslims give blood to Hindu bomb victims

MUMBAI - Indian Muslims queued for hours on Wednesday to give blood to their Hindu neighbours wounded in the Mumbai train bombings, in a rare show of harmony in a city with a long history of rioting between the two communities.

“We don’t care whether it’s a Hindu or a Muslim who gets our blood as long as we can save them,” said Abdul Khan, one of dozens of Muslim men waiting in line at the blood bank at Siddarth Hospital, near one blast site at Jogeshwari station.

Many see Tuesday’s deadly strikes that killed more than 180 people and wounded more than 700 as the latest in a campaign of violence by Islamist militants fighting Indian rule in the disputed region of Kashmir.

This has long fomented suspicions between Mumbai’s Hindus and the minority Muslim population, and often triggered violent rioting.

Mumbai, a metropolis of 17 million people, has been hit by a series of bomb blasts in the past one and half decades, the worst a series of explosions in 1993 that killed more than 260 people.

Past attacks were usually blamed on Muslim groups trying to avenge Muslim deaths in widespread religious rioting after Hindu zealots demolished a 16th century mosque in northern India.

But such thoughts were far from Pasha Mian Sheikh’s mind when he threw open the doors of the Islamia Arabia Mosque, metres from the tracks near the suburb of Jogeshwari, to offer shelter, food and water to the walking wounded.

“People are trying to break our harmony but they have failed,” he said of the bombers. “Hundreds of Muslims yesterday showed a lot of courage and harmony when they helped out their Hindu brothers. Hindus and Muslims are together in Mumbai.”

Leaders of India’s hardline Hindu Shiv Sena party said they had been overwhelmed by the Muslim response.

“Hindus and Muslims walked hand in hand yesterday,” said Manohar Kargaonkar, a Shiv Sena official.

“When you read a newspaper you always find that a Muslim terrorist is behind subversive activity. But these people have shown what brotherhood is.”

Analysts and community leaders say weariness after decades of conflict as well as rising prosperity from the country’s booming economy have helped cool tempers between Hindus and Muslims.

“We are getting increasing reports of Hindu-Muslim harmony from Mumbai this year unlike the earlier times, Maulana Jalaluddin Umri, a top Islamic cleric, told Reuters by phone from Delhi.

“They have realised terrorists belong to one community or the other, but what people have learnt is not to give in to terror tactics.”

Meanwhile, bomb victims recovering at Mumbai’s hospitals say they did not worry about the religion of those who donated blood.

“We will never give in to communal violence,” said Lata Sirsha, who was injured on head and legs.
“This is the real Mumbai which cannot be defeated.”

I sincerely hope this is remembered before the wide scale rioting starts.

Nothing earth shattering or intellectually demanding.

Just this : " I sincerely hope this is remembered before the wide scale rioting starts."

Muslims are showing that they were well deserving of true Indian citizenship and its quite remarkable that they're showing this much solidarity. People pledge support, they've given blood.

Let me put it this way then "I hope this is remembered the next time people make outrageous assumptions that Indian Muslims support Pakistan in cricket matches."

.
Asim,
Dont bait. None of us here think Indian muslims support Pakistan. Time and again, I and the others had repeated the same, but you seem to be in a warp to understand.

Then it'll be pi$$ing contest.

I don't keep record but its something Indians on "other" forums have thrown in my face all the time. I figured its a common perception. I'm not baiting just speaking up for the Indian Muslims. If you agree, join int.

I dont agree in your notion that Indian muslims support Pakistan. And again, I guess the Indian muslims can speak very well for themselves, they dont need a Pakistani muslim mouthpiece.

As I said, it will just end up in a pi$$ing contest.

It wasn't a notion, its a claim that I've belittled as well but its a complaint shared by Indians. I did call it outrageous didn't I?

Its not worth continuing this, as I said, your comment was unncesessary even if you felt it as outrageous deep down inside.

Karnataka Muslims protest Mumbai blasts

DM Kumar/Nupur Basu, Thursday, July 15, 2006 (Bangalore): Several Muslim organisations in Bangalore stunned by Tuesday's serial blasts in Mumbai and Srinagar gathered in solidarity for the victims on Wednesday.

The activists held a silent protest in front of Mahatma Gandhi's statue on the busy M G Road in Bangalore to register their protest.

Muslims held up posters condemning the chilling serial blasts and described the violence on civilians as against the diktats of the Holy Koran.

"We have taken an oath that we are going to fight this terrorism. And we have also taken an oath that we are going to oppose this type of oppression on innocent people," said Naseer Ahmed, MLC.

To create communal rift

Muslim activists described the attacks as a blot on India's secular fabric.

"Their goal of terrorists is only one end the peace between the two communities and disrupt the country. They have no other intention, they only want to weaken this country," Moulana Qadeer Ahmed Shah, member, All India Muslim Personal Law Board.

"There are some people who don't want Hindus and Muslims to live together. They want to live together in Karnataka, Andhra, Tamil Nadu, in Maharshtra everywhere. They cannot stand this that India is progressing. India's enemies cannot stand this," said Mohammed Haneef Afsar Ajeez , Chief Priest.

"We are like brothers Hindus and Muslims. They are trying to break us, terrorists do not have any religion. They are neither Hindus nor Muslims, they have done this in our India and we are very unhappy," said Zamir Ahmed Khan,Waqf Welfare Board.

Last December Bangalore had been shaken up by the brutal attacks on innocent scientists, one of the worst terror attacks the city had known and the threat perception in the city continues.

Meanwhile, the Karnataka government on Thursday held a high level meeting to assess the security in the state following call from the Home Minister to the state Chief Minister.
