High-speed trains have traveled 1.6 billion kilometers as Beijing-Shanghai route turns 10
In less than 10 days, the Beijing-Shanghai High Speed Rail will be 10 years old and one of the world’s fastest railway lines will introduce new smart trains on Friday. Bullet trains on the route have traveled a combined 1.6 billion kilometers, or nearly 40,000 laps around the earth in a decade. Trains have a maximum speed of 350 kilometers an hour and departure intervals of just four minutes during peak hours, while 27 percent of the country’s population live in cities along the route.

If Chinese can be nice, wants to win friends and give technology we can build the same train network in Vietnam in 10 years.

A loss making project.
The Shanghai-Beijing HSR route is very profitable.

Below is its financial data 2020, in RMB.

Because of the high utilization of the current Bejing/Shanghai HSR route, a 2nd route that parallel to the existing one is now under planning. Actually for some sections of the 2nd route, the construction work has been started.

China cares more about indirect benefits, the overall economy being boosted by HSR from going through provinces, cities and towns, this is massives, operation cost of HSR is dwarfed by the indirect benefits China reaped, China learned it well from the past decade.
