On Thursday, the Royal Air Force (RAF) released pictures of two Russian bombers that flew into the UK's area of interest on Wednesday.

The Russian Tu-160 Blackjacks were intercepted by RAF Typhoons as they flew close to the UK's airspace.

The Tu-160 is capable of carrying a nuclear cruise missiles although there is no suggestion the two jets intercepted on Wednesday were armed with such weapons.

According to the BBC, Russian military planes have been intercepted near the UK at least six times in the past year.

The RAF jets were scrambled from an airbase in Coningsby, Lincolnshire.

"We can confirm that quick reaction alert Typhoon aircraft from RAF Coningsby have intercepted two Russian Blackjack bombers and escorted them while they were in the UK area of interest," a RAF spokesperson told The Independent. "At no point did the Russian aircraft enter UK territorial airspace."

I know about that, Vauban.

The "interception" began near our airspace and our P.O. took it in.
Then the "hunt" was switched over to the RAF.

In essence, that Blackjack veered low by our coasts to sweep up towards the UK
in reverse of their customary northern approach with southern turnaround of it.
It makes sense for the Russians to practice all ingress routes.

But Blue M. is right that it has a lot more to do with Putin's internal propaganda needs
than a real necessity to tickle air defences for testing purposes.

Good day all ( even Providence :p: ), Tay.

Blow it up guys... Russians just talk and threaten about sanctios for a couple of months then they don't dare to do it again.

...yeah-yeah, just the thing - White Swan can do up to 3M for quite a long timespan, those jets couldn't, so if needed normal jets unable catchup, soo

Well, to be honest i am happy that Russia once in a while provokes/fly close to our shores/'area of interest'(even though they never or hardly ever enter our airspace per se). This will hopefully shake up our politicians and public who seem to have entered a state of complacency to the point that we are debating about renewing our nuclear deterrent,SSBN, acquiring new weapon systems or increasing our defence forces/budget etc.
The more Putin engages in such futile provocation the better for our military. So i welcome such news. Keep them coming Putin. :enjoy:
