The PTM (Pushtun Tahaffuz Movement) rose to its prominence after the extrajudicial killing of a pukhtun Naqeeb Ullah Mehsud at the hands of Karachi Police. Pukhtun Youth, primarily from FATA, staged protests for the arrest of Rao Anwar who was thought to be responsible for the extrajudicial killing of several pukhtun youths. These protests gained strength and since then it has evolved into a prominent voice of unheard Pukthun youth from FATA.

While the demands of PTM protesters are straightforward and govt should do everything to provide justice to every Pakistani however this movement was portrayed by Indian and Afghanistan media as a confrontation of Pukhtuns with state of Pakistan. While the social media was brimmed with voices from across both borders calling it a awakening of Pukhtun youth to get freedom from the "clutches" of state of Pakistan, other hardliners of Pushtunistan from Afghanistan chimed in to claim that Pakistan Pukhtuns believe in the absurd theory. Due to support from Afghanistan and India (unofficially) several eyebrows were raised in Pakistan giving people mixed feeling about the PTM Movement.

The merger of FATA with KPK is a step in right direction and hopefully it will provide the residents of FATA the much awaited reforms and access to mainstream Pakistan. Other areas of development remain the education, health and infrastructure. A proactive approach from civil-military in handing over the governance to FATA residents will end grievances and the pushtunistan monster will be buried once and for all.

Interestingly, while the PTM was gaining strengths in Pakistan a similar peace protest was being held in Helmand Afghanistan, where people of Helmand were fed up with the war and wanted Government and taliban to come to negotiation table instead of taking up arms against each other.

While the lip service to peace protesters, who went on to hunger strike, was done by Afghanistan's president however nothing have been done on ground to address the grievances of Helmand protestors.

The taliban are gaining more grounds in afghanistan and are rejecting the peace offers by weak govt in Kabul while the people of Afghanistan want cease fire. It would be interesting to know all those people from eastern and western border what are their thoughts on the issue. Will the demand of protesters will be fulfilled or they will let at the mercy of taliban?
