Staff Report
ISLAMABAD: The first ever Heatstroke Centre in the country was opened at Federal Government Services Hospital (FGSH), popularly known as Polyclinic, on Friday to facilitate heatstroke patients of Rawalpindi and Islamabad, as the temperature is touching 45 degrees Celsius in the twin cities.
FGSH Executive Director (ED) Shaukat Hameed Kiani inaugurated the Centre. He said most of the patients suffering from heatstroke were labourers who worked in sun exposure.
Every patient visiting the centre would be treated on emergency basis and he would be able to regain health to work again in 30 minutes time, Kiani said.
Talking about the heatstroke, the ED said poor persons with lack of basic diet, shelter and water suffered from heatstroke. He said all day labour under the blistering sun made them suffer from this disease. All over the country there exists Cardiac, Allergy and other centres meant to treat wealthy persons but the Heatstroke Centre would work for the poor patients, Kiani said.
Talking to Daily Times, Sharif Astori, spokesman for the hospital, said over 30 patients suffering from heatstroke visited the emergency department of Polyclinic daily. We have advised emergency department to refer patients suffering from heat to the Heatstroke Centre where they would be provided immediate medication, Astori said, adding, if the patients condition were critical he would be shifted to a ward.
He said Heatstroke Centre had four beds initially, but according to situation the number of beds would be increased.
