In direction of Havelsan innovation management, Havelsan's mission, vision and strategic objectives;

Carries out the main activities of collecting, evaluating, rewarding and projecting innovative ideas, products, business area, solution proposals.

HAVELSAN Innovation Management Portal is designed to incorporate our external stakeholders and field specialists into the HAVELSAN innovation processes, using our "in-house innovation" approach with our in-house stakeholders, "open innovation" approach.

For The first event of the Open Innovation Platform of HAVELSAN, HAVELSAN opened the "Serious Game" Open Innovation Contest on 18 January 2017. Deadline for applications is April 14, 2017.

"SERIOUS GAME" The Open Innovation Contest is an open innovation competition that everyone can participate anywhere in the world.
HAVELSAN is looking for creative solutions that game engine technology can use in simulation environments as part of "SERIOUS GAME".

HAVELSAN “SERIOUS GAME” OPEN INNOVATION CONTEST

The HAVELSAN “Serious Game” Open Innovation Contest to be organized for the first time this year is an innovation contest open to everybody throughout the world.

SUMMARY

HAVELSAN seeks for the creative solutions for the game engine technology to be used in the simulation environments for the “Serious Game”.

One of the most important problems in deploying the game engines in the simulation scenarios is the restrictions encountered in the game engine reactions and physical model behaviors in cases where the simulation scenario is larger than the usual range. This competition aims at finding solutions that can eliminate the game engine limitations and problems.

In the context of this challenge;

1. It is expected that solutions are offered for one or more specific problem(s) specified in the Definition of Needs section below. The proposed solutions must be explicit and in compliance with the current literature (patents, scientific articles, open source software, hardware, etc.)

2. The proposed solutions should be suitable for experimental proof of concept and any applicable documentation, codes and executable files should be submitted.

DEFINITION OF NEEDS

General constraints for the solutions to be offered:

1. The scenario area will preferably be at least 250 x 250 km2. The physical engine should create realistic solutions in this area (e.g. consistent and realistic reactions of the vehicle models to be placed in certain intervals on two perpendicular lines of 250 kilometers).

2. The terrain interactions will be realistic in both visual and physical aspects (terrain deformations, e.g.: mine blasting, missile hit, land excavation by bulldozers, mud simulation, etc.).

3. The building destructions, explosions, cracks and falls will be simulated.

4. Any necessary characters will be animated and directed for realization of the infantry and tank training formations within the framework of the artificial intelligence.

5. The game engine should be the Unreal Engine version4.13 and higher.
The participants are responsible to demonstrate the capabilities of their own solutions.

In this competition, the participants are expected to develop solutions for one or more of the below listed problems within the framework of the above listed overall limitations:

1. Realistic CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear) simulation, both physical and visual effects (Example reference: Glasstone And Dolan, Effects of Nuclear Weapons, 1997, 3rd Edition)

2. Tank and ZPT type vehicles crawler simulation and realistic track effects of such crawls on land (e.g. mud traps, drive on asphalt, mud falls from the track or wheel on asphalt, etc.)

3. Realistic simulations of armor deformation by the ammo hit onto the armored vehicles, and any other possible damages and fires on the vehicles.

4. Urban area and traffic simulations.

5. Atmospheric effects on land (mudding by rain and snow, thermal camera image changes, mud drying by sun, etc.)

6. Introduction of human body movements, and real time simulation, imaging and use thereof as to cover the virtual reality (by means of using virtual reality googles and movement sensitive cameras)

RULES FOR PARTICIPATION

1. The “Serious Game” Solution Contest will start on January 18, 2017, last for 3 (three) months and application will end on April 14, 2017.

2. The contest is open for individual and team participation.

3. The applications will be posted via the HAVELSAN Innovation Management Portal (https://inovasyon.havelsan.com.tr)

4. Presentation of maximum 20 pages that explains the proposed solution should be uploaded with the application.

5. The participants who have completed their online applications will be invited for a mentoring session on February 20, 2017 and March 20, 2017. Participants are expected to bring their solutions with them to these meetings.

6. The developed solution should be uploaded on the HAVELSAN’s secure FTP server before April 14, 2017. SFTP username and password will be provided to the participants via SMS.

7. The first, second and third solutions will be selected among the participants prequalified by the jury and the HAVELSAN Technology Management Board.

8. The award ceremony for the finalists will be held on April 27, 2017 in the HAVELSAN A.Ş. headquarters.

9. The HAVELSAN employees, jury members and their first degree relatives may not participate in the contest.

AWARDS

1. First Winner Award: TL 25,000
2. Second Winner Award: TL 15,000
3. Third Winner Award: TL 10,000

Furthermore, the participants may be offered the following opportunities:
⦁ Candidate Engineer in HAVELSAN
⦁ Internship in HAVELSAN

Ideas sent to the competition will be judged according to the following criteria. The value in parentheses refers to the degree of importance of the criterion.

- What is the maximum allowable terrain size in your solution? (5/5)
- What is the maximum allowable number of polygons in your solution? (5/5)
- What is the performance (fps) of your solution? (5/5)
- Does your solution contain any third party plugin/tool? If yes, please clearly indicate it, including the price. (5/5)
- How is your Unreal (software) project designed? (5/5)
- What is the level of visual fidelity of your software? (5/5)
- What is the level of your physical fidelity of your software? (5/5)
