KARACHI: Recently released Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) chief Hafiz Saeed has filed a petition in the United Nations (UN) for the delisting of his name from the UN’s list of designated terrorists, learnt The Express Tribune.

In December 2008, Saeed was put on the list of designated terrorists by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for his alleged role in the Mumbai 2008 attacks.

US warns of repercussions for Pakistan over Hafiz Saeed’s release

Speaking to The Express Tribune, Saeed’s spokesperson, Nadeem Awan, confirmed the petition has been filed on behalf of the JuD chief by Supreme Court Advocate Navid Rasul Mirza.

“We were working on this petition since a long time and it was filed to the UN while Hafiz Saeed was still under house arrest,” Awan stated.

In January, the government placed Saeed under house arrest for his activities to ‘harm peace and security’. His arrest was extended in April and then again in August before being lifted in November.

Barrister Haider Rasul Mirza, of Mirza and Mirza associates, the firm representing Saeed, refused to comment as he could not divulge details of his clients saying it is not under his mandate to do so.

According to the UN, a formal petition can be filed by individuals, groups, undertakings or entities seeking to be removed from the Security Council’s al Qaeda Sanctions Committee List can submit their request for delisting to an independent and impartial Ombudsperson who has been appointed by the Secretary-General.

The UN put Saeed on the list pursuant to paragraphs 1 and 2 of resolution 1822 (2008) as “being associated with Lashkar-e-Tayyiba (LeT) (QDe.118) and al Qaeda (QDe.004) for ‘participating in the financing, planning, facilitating, preparing or perpetrating of acts of activities by, in conjunction with, under the name of, on behalf or in support of’ both entities.’”

LeT and several of its front organisations, leaders, and operatives remain under both the United States State Department and Treasury Department sanctions. Since 2012, the US has offered a $10 million reward for information bringing Saeed to justice.

However, India has failed to provide any concrete evidence to initiate legal proceedings against Saeed, even after repeated insistence from Pakistan.

Last week, during a press briefing Foreign Office Spokesperson Muhammad Faisal refused to comment on Saeed’s release stating that the “question pertains to the Ministry of Interior.”

Good for him. Clearly the man is confident there is no evidence against him in the accusations of terrorism.

. .
He sought a legal way for himself to be proven innocent on the basis of whatever evidence and substance he has to back up his case. I am sure, proceeding will be impartial and unbiased. However, the contents and details of plea would be interesting to read.

Hafiz Saeed has filed a petition in the UN seeking removal of his name from the list of designated terrorists on the ground that none of the allegations against him, either related to terrorism or otherwise, has been proved in the Pakistani courts.

. .
Doubt he'll ever get removed but it'll be the funniest thing ever if he does.

Now tell me Indians how come a terrorist himself file a petition for not to be listed. If you have proof against him come forward otherwise he is and will be innocent.

It was, and is, disgusting, sickening to see members come forward one after the other to congratulate this murderer on his release. The evidence has been given time and again, and has been deliberately not been put up in court, and the case against him has been deliberately weakened by the prosecution, with obvious results.

[edited: I cannot believe that someone decent and honorable would have cited this news to be provocative. It must be that he has merely reported a very important development, as he says himself.]

I really regret that this was posted by a person for whom I have had the greatest respect. It was bitter to find that that trust and respect was misplaced.

Woah. So angry. Well can't blame you. Reverse roles and we would be too but relax.

As for the thread. Never ever going to happen. The UN placed him in the list bcz there was evidence against him. We can say US got the bounty bcz US is demonic and evil e.t.c but the UN is the world organization and one of our top friends is in the security council so there was top evidence.

Putting aside his charitable works which is admirable, we can discuss his anti India activities. Now you can agree or disagree with the activities but these are activities and they are real.

I spoke to his second in command a few times. He is fighting litigation of land grabbef by relatives. After a few jokes like , " who the hell would mess with you guys?" And " why are you fighting this mess for the last ten years. Do an out of court " settlement". His answer was we would never hurt Pakistanis. Our commander has given explicit orders to no matter what never hurt pakistan.

Insightful conversations and many of his predictions came true.

In all in all. Not going to happen. If it did, i would laugh my head off but it would not happen.

Quite frankly the state of pakistan should stay away from this petition.

It is posted as a news rather than a support. Even if he has been released by the Court in Pakistan, I am sure, the matter will be proceeded with due reality and substance before United Nations. Misplacing the respect based upon a news? Posted for a purpose as to see how this is going to unfold. State is not backing or supporting him in this case which is an individual matter.

What you are saying is blame rather than proof. I am asking for proof and you are saying that he is this and that. Okay whatever he has done prove it in UN. It's so childish when you just to call anyone terrorist it's just seems like a guy who is in class 1-2 calls other with names. You are innocent until proven guilty that's the International law.

.
Lol.
He has less chance of getting removed from the list than Burundi has of conquering Russia.
