GUJRANWALA – An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Gujranwala on Monday indicted former station house officer (SHO) Shahzad Warraich, the main accused in the killings of two lawyers in the Daska incident.

Two lawyers, including the president of the local bar association, were killed by police during a clash on May 25 in Daska. Warraich had allegedly fired at the lawyers who were protesting outside the Daska tehsil municipal administration (TMA) office on kutchehry road against its record keeper for allegedly misbehaving with a lawyer, Amir Shahzad Bajwa.

The case was heard by ATC judge Justice Bushra Zaman in a courtroom in Gujranwala Central Jail. The former SHO was produced in the ATC amidst strict security. The court indicted Warraich under Sections 302, 324, 337D, 337A1 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) and Sections 6 and 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA).

Warriach denied the allegations and sought time from the ATC to appoint a lawyer to represent him. Accepting the plea, ATC judge Justice Bushra Zaman gave the accused until June 24 to appoint a counsel. The former SHO also submitted a plea in the court which sought removal of sections of ATA from the case. The court will hear the plea on June 24.

Meanwhile, lawyers observed a black day against the murder of their two colleagues by the SHO on Monday. They hoisted black flags atop the bar associations. They demanded severe punishment for the culprits.
