Star Digital Report

The government today decided to scrap purchase of 2 lakh electronic voting machines (EVMs) citing the global economic recession.

Election Commission Secretary Jahangir Alam relayed the government decision to the media during a press conference this afternoon.

He said the decision of purchasing EVM is suspended considering the global economic situation.

The Planning Commission informed the decision to the EC, he said.

In October last year, the EC sent a proposal to the planning ministry to purchase two lakh electronic voting machines and their management with Tk 8,711.44 crore.

With the national elections likely to be held in early January 2024, the EVM issue came to the fore especially after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at an AL meeting on May 7 said voting machines would be used in all 300 constituencies.

The EC forwarded the DPP against the backdrop of its decision to hold the next elections using EVMs at a maximum of 150 seats.

The EC currently has around 1.5 lakh EVMs and with that they can hold elections to 70 or 80 seats.

Introduced in 2010, EVMs were used in various local government elections. The then Election Commission led by ATM Shamsul Huda had used them in the city corporation polls but not in any parliamentary election.

In 2012, the EC headed by Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad also kept EVMs out of national polls.
The Nurul Huda-led commission overhauled the EVM system and used it for polling in six constituencies during the 2018 December national election.

By reading many of the posts/ threads of @Black_cats, I started to think that with a very high GDP of 1 trillion dollars only a few years away, Bd has certainly produced EVMs and is on the way to exporting this item.

But, now it cannot import the item because of the dollar crunch. I am not surprised though.

Lol even biggest economy of the world feeling dollar crunch and many of its largest tech companies have started to lay off people. Rising of commodity prices and fear of recession affecting all country’s in the world not just Bangladesh. India just recently even had a -12% growth of its GDP due to COVID lockdown. I do not even know what you are trying to blabbering all along. Bangladesh still needs to go 12-18 years before it can reach a trillion usd economy in nominal term. That’s a long way ahead.

Why is dollar crunch in BD? One reason is Hasina men like S. Alam stole $3 billion from BD. There are tens of other cases whereby Hasoina men stole money.

BAL govt does not even know how to control stealing money and then laundering.

No one denied that. It’s a known fact. Money laundering needs to be stopped. In between 2008-2017 on average 7–10 billion usd is laundered per year. That’s a huge amount.
