ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on Tuesday observed that the Taliban were not a phenomenon that could not be controlled by the government.A three-member bench of the apex court, comprising, Justice Gulzar Ahmed and Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed, heard the Karachi law and order situation case.

The court directed Sindh Advocate General Fateh Muhammad Malik to ensure the arrest of the killers of MQM MPA Manzar Imam by February 6 and submit a compliance report before it.The court also sought from the Sindh police a reply about the release of Ajmal Pahari.

Chief Justice Iftikhar told the Sindh advocate general that the court may take up the case on February 6 at the Karachi Registry but directed him to the ensure arrest of the assassins of Manzar Imam.

During the hearing, the chief justice him to ensure arrest of assassins of Manzar Imam.During the hearing, the chief justice observed that killing of Manzar Imam was a test case for police and if the police failed to arrest the killers then it would mean that it cannot catch anyone.

The chief justice remarked that Manzar Imam was killed along with his guards and recalled that in the Shahzeb Khan murder case the civil society had come to the fore and the accused was arrested on the orders of the court.

He further said that for the court everyone is Shahzeb. Every officer was enjoying privileges, but not taking care of the common man, it was our duty to protect the life and property of every person, the CJ added.

The CJ enquired from the police officials as to how many corpses were found in Karachi that day (Monday), to which, police officials replied that until last night it was five, three more were found in the morning.

The CJ said that he came to know through a newspaper that Ajmal Pahari has been released while the Sindh police have taken the stance that it was done under court pressure. The CJ, however, told the police that if they don’t present the evidence, then the court has no alternative but to order release of the accused.

The CJ further said that the court’s decisions are not being implemented and recalled that the court in its previous order had directed the Sindh government to de-politicise police.Advocate General Sindh, Fateh Muhammad Malik told the court that the Taliban factor plays a part in the law and order situation in Karachi.
