Government is Converting CNG Stations to Electric Car Charging Points: Reports
Posted 3 days ago by Hasan Saeed
According to media reports, the government has given the go-ahead to an environmental policy that includes the plan to convert 3,000 CNG stations across the country into Electric Vehicle charging stations.

Sources have said that policymakers were trying to figure out how the government aimed to manage power consumption because, in the future, large numbers of EVs being charged at home especially during peak hours could overload local power transformers.

The officials said:

The charging stations for EVs will require electricity that will be supplied through distribution companies only, unless someone makes their own power supply arrangements.

The officials further added that other questions regarding the policy remained unanswered, he said:

Can battery-powered EVs be competitive with conventionally fueled vehicles in the next five to ten years? How and when will cost-effective charging infrastructure be developed in the country?

On Tuesday, a spokesperson from the climate ministry said that carbon emissions from motor vehicles were one of the biggest contributors to air pollution which is why they were working hard to bring electric vehicles in the country.

“The use of electric vehicles may help resolve many issues, including air pollution, rising fuel import bill, and saving two-thirds on transportation,” the spokesperson said.

We already have surplus Electricity production our production is 8-10 thousand Mega Watts more than peak demand and over the next two years more and more Plants foolishly started by the previous government will be coming online. That electricity needs to be used otherwise even if we dont use it IPP policy of the past forces us to pay for the full production capacity an not the demand.

What people then and still dont get is that the main reason for Load shedding wasnt the Installed capacity but the Transmission losses and Theft that caused the circular debt to balloon.

By getting rid of CNG we would be able to decrease our CAD even more and save the precious foreign reserves.

How many can afford electric cars even the
Gas driven cars are beyond the reach of middle class hence much ado about nothing

Lol loadshedding is still there

Just wanna point out, as Pakistan continues to grow and industrialize, that surplus is quickly going to disappear. In fact, if Pakistan doesn't act now, it will likely run into another energy crisis within a decade.

Excellent decision.

GOP should also request Tesla to invest in Pakistan. Tesla offer highest quality EV solutions in the world. Tesla Model 3 is excellent and affordable.

True.

These.electric.car are way expensive.

Well, Auto CNG experiment was a disaster. Now much of Pakistan is facing shortage of much-needed supply of gas in homes. Solar-powered appliances are very expensive unfortunately.

Pakistan should learn to utilize its precious natural resources carefully. WE cannot afford disastrous decisions in this matter.

A welcome and foresighted move by GoP. EV are definitely the better choice over ICV. The only major downside for EV seems to be the required infrastructure on a national scale( think petrol pumps for EV) and the energy generation for the increased demand.

South asian countries have an unhealthy dependence on fossil fuels.

I know to that end even more Power plants are in the pipeline either under construction or in planning phases. But until we get there we need to use this excess production somehow so the overall cost to the end consumers can be decreased. Other wise we are just paying for something that we might use 10 years down the line.

Yes its still there for the loss making Feeders. In Pakistan 50-60 feeders have minimal losses and are not facing Any load shedding. The rest have huge losses 20 percent overall in some cases like Peshawar Electric supply Company its over 30 percent.

Unless the Transmission losses and Theft is not controlled Load shedding will continue. By not feeding Electricity to these feeders all the time Electricity distributors are minimizing their losses Which the GOP has to compensate for in the forms of Subsidies and Circular Debt. GOP is still paying over 110 billion in Electricity Subsidies.

Transmission losses are huge and need billions of dollars of investment to completely get rid off. GOP doesnt have that kind of money and is trying to Minimize losses in the high loss areas like Peshawar with what little resources they have.

Are you suggesting that the previous govt has step up power plants considering the rising electricity demand, a mistake?

Central power purchase agency (CPPA) paid over Rs203 billion to the IPPs (independent power producers) as capacity charges in 2018 that number has increased now as more power houses came online.

The capacity charges are paid to those power houses which are available for power generation but the government does not purchase power from them because there is no demand or more efficient plants are available. Like plants run on furnace oil and diesel are made non-functional, but they all are being paid the capacity charges.

Under IPP policy devised under previous GOP government will continue to pay till five years after 2028 as the Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with most of the IPPs have been signed for 25-30 years time and they will end up by 2028 and capacity charges payments will continue 5 years beyond 2028.

Current GOP intends to scrap these agreements as they expire but this has already made power sector unsustainable. I am not blaming the previous Government for building power plants as some of you are thinking I Used the term Foolishly because but they didnt planned or think it over clearly as evident from their stupid policy.

And there are dozens of more projects under this policy that will come online over the next few years putting more pressure on our finances as the Capacity charges will balloon to over 400 billion.

Policy of Building new Plants wasnt wrong but the contracts under IPP Projects are draining the Tax payers money. To solve one Problem the previous government have put huge burden on the people for the decade to come.

Where is the CNG going to come from??

There a shortage of that as well...
Except for karachi or interior Sindh no one uses cng anymore. Better convert those stations into ev stations after introducing good brand cheap electric vehicles.

It wont take a decade. Consumption growth is increasing alot and half of the country still enjoy loadshedding including my town (4-6 hours a day). Some may say its due to low return feeders but then what about those who pay bills? Plus, the electricity distribution system inagurated by Muhammad Ali jinnah. We lose 20-30% of electricity to transmission system. Just sit idle for 2 years and we will again see those years returning back
