Govenment plans five more rail freight corridors
The government is planning to build five new dedicated freight corridors connecting cities in different parts of the country to enhance Railways' transportation capacity.

Eastern dedicated freight corridors (1,839 km) connecting Dankuni near Kolkata with Ludhiana in Punjab and Western corridor (1,499 km) connecting Jawahar Lal Nehru Port in Mumbai with Dadri/Rewari near Delhi are already being implemented.

"Apart from Eastern and Western DFCs, a feasibility study has also been undertaken on four future freight corridors... A pre-feasibility study of Chennai-Bangalore Freight Corridor is also being proposed," the Economic Survey said on Wednesday.

The proposed corridors -- East-West Corridor (Kolkata- Mumbai), North-South Corridor (Delhi-Chennai), East Coast Corridor (Kharagpur-Vijayawada) and Southern Corridor (Goa- Chennai) -- are being mulled to increase transportation capacity, reduce unit costs of transportation and improve service quality.

"Out of 10,703 hectres of land to be acquired for the project, 7,768 hectres (73 per cent) have already been awarded under the Railway Amendment Act (RAA) 2008. The Eastern and Western DFC projects are being funded through a mix of bilateral/multilateral loans, gross budgetary support (GBS), and PPP," it said.

Following commissioning of the Eastern and Western dedicated freight corridors (DFCs), the government plans to upgrade the speed of passenger trains to 160-200 kmph on the existing routes.

@RISING SUN; Hey amigo why are you getting so frenetic on hearing this news?
Because every one can see that Mr. Bansal has already cleared the national rail & then showing us the moon. Isn't it funny that government doesn't have the money for 1 DFC and it's giving us the feel of 5 more DFC. And perhaps you are not noticing minister sahib has said very cunningly proposing word, next government will have to bear the consequences whether Congress or BJP. I don't care for them, I care for only railway because it's our property & they are giving us a look like we are fools.
BTW My father is railway A grade servant, so I feel pain more than others.

I don't think it is as bad as that. First of all, the DFCs are not projects being managed and funded by the Indian Railways alone.
THe first DFC is actually getting the major component of the funding from Japan; who inturn will set up industries along the DFC. As far as I can make out; all the DFCs will use the same route for funding. The days of Govt. trying to do everything and funding out of its own pockets seem to be over.

You are not getting my point mate. What I am trying to saying that Railways has already planned the DFC on same route as NHRC have implemented the golden 4 metro corner highway & east east and north south corridor. What Mr Bansal is doing is just making announcements again to score brownie points. He will say in future that our government had did this, we introduced this and that. I have problem with this approach. Although here in Mumbai employees are bit happy because railway has provided more resources for locals but they are unhappy for budget because it has crash landed them(after few good steps taken earlier by Mr Bansal their hopes were high, but now just don't ask.
